I've watched this movie before (it's on right now) and it just now dawned on me that Bill Mauldin of "Willie and Joe" fame is in it! Great combat cartoonist and he could act too!

It's the original 1951 version starring Audie Murphy. Mauldin plays Private Wilson.

Never read the book, but the movie is pretty good. And Audie Murphy is one of the greatest combat soldiers this country ever produced. He earned a battlefield commission in WWII, but he looks like a teenager in this move. Of course, the lead character is a teenager, so it made sense to cast him in the role.

Mauldin rocks.
If you're ever in OKC, check out the infantry museum. When I was there they had a whole exibit of original toons. Totally awesome.
