Lionel Jospin, the French Prime Minister, said the Americans should be "reasonable" in their response. Alain Richard, his defence minister, said the attacks were "not acts of war". Tell you what, you dumbass (Jospin). I'll take a 767-load of YOUR citizens, fly it into the Eiffel Tower, and see if YOU think THAT'S an act of war. What a bunch of moronic pussies. It's the same old same old, NATO get's called on their obligations and the french get cold feet. It's been the same since NATO's birth, the french for some reason still think they are a superpower when all they are is a moderate european country still living in the colonial ages.

We've helped rebuild France several times, including their "kick ass" railways which they always brag about, over half of their country which was craters and bodies, and so forth.
In return the french treat Americans like dirt when we visit, never have the backbone to stand behind us, and pussy foot around everything. I think it's time to drop their sorry asses from NATO and as an ally. When THEY need any help, we should merely point out to them all the years they have done NOTHING for the entire world. The French have been dickheads to us even during WWII. My father was in Paris right after the liberation. He was on a streetcar once when a couple of GIs were horsing around. A couple of Frenchmen commented that they were worse than the Germans. My father, who speaks fluent French (Canadian French!), went up one side of them and down the other. Bunch of pussies. But, oh, they sunk the Rainbow Warrior.

The French national self-image demands that they never be seen as a toady of the US. If you keep that in mind, you will never expect them to cooperate with the US/NATO, and they will never disappoint you. They like to think of themselves as still being one of the preeminent nations in the world as they were before the World Wars. That has flatly not been the case since DeGaulle's decolonization policies of the 50's and 60's at least, and IMO not since 1939.
As a nation, they haven't had the ability to successfully prosecute a war since Napoleon Bonaparte was in running their show, and since that time their best troops were historically non-French nationals e.g. the Foreign Legion and North African Colonial troops. Now think about it, how would you feel if the US had become a 3rd rate nation, been bested over and over militarily by a neighboring nation, lost or gave up almost all possessions (including ones that had been full-fledged states), and the only part of our military that was worthwhile was made up of foreigners? Wouldn't YOU feel that it was important that we salvage a last scrap of our dignity by not being seen as todies to the Russians/Chinese/whoever? Whoever said "fvck the French" had the right idea. As a postscript, my uncles who served in Europe during WWII detested the French. A couple of amusing comments I heard them make: "The French make perfume because they don't know how to make soap." "In France, you couldn't step out a door and walk five paces in any direction without stepping in a pile of shytte." |

The French have a history of appeasement when it comes to dealing with terrorists. In the '70's they had an agreement with the leaders of some major terrorist organizations- they could have sanctuary in France as long as they didn't commit any terrorist acts within the country. The terrorist leaders had to give up an occasional low-level flunky so that French intelligence (an oxymoron if I ever heard one) could make it look like they were 'fighting terrorism'. They are a bunch of sorry, cowardly bastards.

Not to rain on the parade, but I lived in France for a while and it was OK. Great food and they were generally very nice, much nicer than the English. Kind of a unique little culture too, which was interesting to experience. Although some of their elites may despise us, the common people really love Americans and American culture.
