I'd enlisted in March, 1982, on delayed entry into the Air Force. Some of my classmates worried I was going to be sent to the Falklands, I had to explain to the airheads that it was a fight between the Brits and the Argentines.

In moves reminiscent of the children's tale: "The Mouse that Roared," Argentina's prime minister is still complaining about the so-called "malvinas" (the Falkland Islands) belonging to the U.K.
The U.K. military presence in and around the Falklands is thought to be small - including one advanced tech guided missle ship, at least one sub and about 4 advanced fighters. But the Argentine military is a mere shadow of its former self and the economy of Argentina is still a mess more than a decade after the collapse of the Peso (previously, it was pegged in value to the U.S. dollar. That did not work out well for them). Plus, the U.K. probably has enough satalite tech to see the Argies comming looooong ahead of time. If the Argies were foolish enough to try a second invasion, the U.K. sub(s) can decimate anything undersea, the surface ship can decimate anything on the water, and whatever's left over or in the air won't get past the jets. Why is anyone still interested? Because: there may be undersea oil deposits in the region and Argentina is so desperate, they have nothing to lose by saber-rattling over a lost cause. |

A bomber fleet that did not practice inflight refueling or conventional bombing or have maps of the target...

Shitty fusing saved a lot of British lives I read in Max Stanley's book (I think) that there were fuze problems. The Argies tried to get the fuzes replaced by the American OEM as they were still under warranty and they were turned away. And they did have good brave pilots. They were flying against British warships and Harriers at the very limit of their fuel range. |

Shitty fusing saved a lot of British lives Yes - that is my understanding as well. From what I recall, the various Brit anti-aircraft missiles proved devastating as soon as they were deployed against Argy air assets. The immediate response by Argy pilots was to come in on bombing runs at extremely low altitude; to have done otherwise would have been nearly suicidal on the pilot's part given the technology they were forced to fight with; I do not believe they had effective ECM to counter the Brit anti-aircraft rockets. Problem was that the munitions carried by the Argies were either not fuzed by the ground based ordnance crew for that altitude or the munitions were not capable of effective deployment at that altitude. EDIT: just re-read post above about U.S.-made fuzes under warranty that they tried to return to Walmart but were turned away. |

Cameron is lucky the Argentina is completly fucked up. They cut their carrier fleet and the harriers, sacked RAF pilots about to graduate and they're lucky to have 6 typhoons working at the same time.
I bet the welfare queens still get their handouts though. |
