Up on Cripple Creek she sends me,
If I spring a leak she mends me,
I don't have to speak, she defends me,
A drunkards dream if I ever did see one...

I saw a bit of The Last Waltz on A&E or AMC one day about two or three years ago.  First time I had ever seen The Band, or even heard their stuff.

I've been hooked since that day.  Even got my wife hooked on their stuff.  It is the cat's meow.  They put their genre to bed as far as I'm concerned.

I'd love to have The Last Waltz box set.

The Band - one of my all time favorites!

"The Last Waltz" DVD is a must have.

- Everyone spare for Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson (who wrote most all of their songs) could sing (Garth simply didn't and, well, Robbie did but not all that well.)  Levon Helm with the essential authentic American (also the only American in the group among the other Canadians) timber of his voice - a combination of soul & country.  Richard Manuel could sing most any part and was had the best voice in the group.  Rick Danko also took his turn on some great songs.  All were among the best at playing their various intruments.

Some favorite tracks:

"The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down" - Levon lead vocal.

"The Weight" - Levon & Rick trading lead.

"King Harvest" - Richard on lead w/Levon.

"Rocking Chair" - Levon & Richard on lead with Richard singing both low AND high parts - amazing.

"Makes No Difference" - Rick on lead.  One of the most heartbreaking songs ever written or sung.

"Katie's Been Gone" - Richard on lead (IIRC, co-written by Richard Manuel & Bob Dylan)

"Don't Do It" - Levon on lead.

"Back to Memphis" - (Chuck Berry cover) Levon on lead, live at Watkins Glen.

Plus many more.

The Band also were one of, if not THE, major influence on Clapton that turned him from the rock/psychadelica of Cream to the country and soul of Derek & The Dominos, and his other work in the early-'70s.

Elton John/Bernie Taupin's song "Levon" takes its name and title character from Levon Helm's name - though the song has nothing to do with Levon Helm.

Speaking of Levon, he's the narrator of the movie "The Right Stuff" and he also plays Jack Ridley (Chuck Yeager's buddy who gives him the cut off broomstick) in the movie.

Just an amazing group.
