Quoted: I've read the website. Looked vaguely interesting, a chance to assist in disaster operations in an official capacity. I know it's not TXNG. All that said, does anyone in GD have any actual experiences with this outfit? Do any of you active military folks have any interactions or anecdotes with the TXSG? Would this be a worthwhile thing to do, for a civilian past recruiting age with no secret desire to pretend to be a soldier? Should I avoid it like the plague, and if so, why? You don't sound like you'd fit in very well with that group. |

During the Hurricane Ike fiasco, I met a few guys from the State Guard. They worked hard and took care of all the shelters we had in town for evacuees. I have no complaints about them and if you have a desire to contribute to Texas during a time of disaster and no desire to enlist in the National Guard, it's a good organization to belong to. |

They have a thread in the Texas Hometown Forum. |

IBSS Go join the real military. ![]() IBSS? Irritable Bowel Syndrome Sufferer. That would explain your reply. Thank you for playing. Not interested in joining the real military at this time, thank you. Interested in part-time, emergency only, uniformed service of my home state. Interested in actual opinions of the organizations from people who have actually interacted with it. Useful for local relief and security issues, welcome augmenting force for when TXNG is overseas? Big joke filled with pogues and fat guys who dream of fighting Commies while wearing ACU's? The group I was around wore MARPATs with Navy and Marine Corps rank insignia. Most were in their 50s and older. |

Quoted: I thought you didn't wanna play pretend soldier? Then why join an organization that tries to do exactly that? Join the American Red Cross as a volunteer, or any of the other similar organizations. You can contribute to your community in the same way without all the posing. I was in it for a number of years and really enjoyed it mostly. Got to help some folks. Also got to carry an M1 Garand on an FTX and also had weapons training with 1950's vintage military riot guns. Very retro. That was more than 10 years ago. I don't know what weapons they currently train with. Their mission is disaster relief not combat related. Although, we did riot training at the Harris county police training facility. Back then a security patch was one of your extra training options. Riot, baton, and combat shotgun was part of that training.
All in all, I would suggest giving it a try if you have any interest. |
