I need to cheaply test some water samples for salinity. Anyone know how I could go about this? Thanks

taste?
Go to a fish store and get a specific gravity tester.  Probably $5 or so.  Keep in mind these will only test a certain range above or below seawater salinity levels.

All kits for salinity here are $45 because you have to buy it to test everything.

Can't do taste. How does a "specific gravity tester" work?

Are you trying to figure out what's in the water because your indoor marijuana crop is needing some work or do you have another reason?  We have had two indoor farmers call our water department in the last year to get a breakdown of the water so they could adjust their crops, both had some sort of crop failure.

I need it to test the salinity of a under the ocean aquifer to determine the freshness of the water. Its late so I can't spell and I am not going to try.

Specific gravity tester or hydrometer.  Look on Ebay.  It's basically a balanced float with a scale on it.  Fill with liquid, insert float, read scale.  Simple saltwater aquarium ones look like the one below.  They have a needle permanently mounted that when filled with water, gives you your reading.  This one runs around $10
