I need me some. Recommended providers? Do's and Don'ts? Any advice apprecaited from those with experinece.
One specific question: one company I inquired with couldn't (or wouldn't) give me a quote until i completed a physical. Rather than commit to one company before the quote, can I get a physical and get multiple copies of it to shop around with?
Thanks in advance.

The physical is standard if you are requesting over X amount of coverage (I think that varies by company). I would do a little due diligence on any company you are looking at given the economic times. Check their ratings etc. Any high A rated company should be fine.

You can still get quotes, but just understand they aren't binding because the underwriters are going to want the results of the physical before they class you.

Any company that requires a physical before they issue a quote should be avoided.  Too much headache and hassle.  As others have stated, stay away from Primerica.  They are the Amway of the insurance world.  Rife with fraud and ineptness, Primerica fills its ranks with the unemployed and professional multi-level-marketers, not insurance professionals.

Most any insurance agency should be able to provide you with a quote from many of the top life insurers.  Our agency uses a brokerage house that shops the insurance to the top 200 carriers and shows the best 20 or 30 according to ratings and price.  This is the best way to go.

I can't think of the name right now but the company that wanted me to take a physical first was the one Dave Ramsey recommends.

They are a good company. Realize they are just producers representing a portfolio of different actual life insurance companies. My policy is from SBLI.

Ah, I didn't realize that. Thanks.

Just curious, how many others here think Dave Ramsey either gets kickbacks or is part owner of Zander Insurance and Churchill Mortgage?

There is always an agenda. I'm sure he gets some sort of advertising dollars from them

I went with a company called Employer's Mutual..  My grandpa has been an agent for them since 1957, and now my dad is.

I got 20 year term, 100k for me and the wife, 10k for each kid, 100k AD&D for all 5 of us.  I'm 31, wife is 28.  $42.00 a month.  They didn't require a physical.  I got enough to pay off the house, and replace my income for a couple years, if I die in an accident.  If either of us die of natural causes, things will be a little tighter, but it won't be here one day gone the next and there will be a little time to prepare.

I'm sure he has a lucrative advertising deal struck with them, not to mention the fact that they help to boost his ELP program. I choose to believe his integrity is such that he wouldn't recommend them if he didn't believe what he were saying though.

Find a reputable broker in your area.  The one I used had prices that were competitive with websites such as insurance.com.  Zander was over priced.  The broker quoted prices without a physical but they assumed a certain health score, so make sure you ask what score/rating their using to get the premium quote.
