As far as I'm concerned, if you look up terrorist in the dictionary, there should be a pic of Arafat next to the definition.

Started the PLO way back in the early/mid 60s.
Killed, or approved the killing of, thousands over his all too long lifetime.

I wonder what he thought when he met Jesus?

I don't think Yassir Arafat was his true name.
I think it translates into something close to "Chief beheader"
He was a terrorist that was responsible for many, many terrible crimes worldwide over the past 35 years.

He was given status as if he were a legitimate Government official/polititian he did not deserve by American Media and the Democrats.  He was nothing more than a crimminal.

I Googled this.

Yassir Arafat Is A War Criminal

Yassir Arafat is a war criminal. Yassir Arafat has compiled a record of atrocities which would be the envy of past war criminals. Compile a list in date order from the PLO’s inception in 1964, specifying all those attacks which were ordered by Arafat. From the blowing-up of planes, through thousands of terrorist attacks, ordering the execution of American Ambassador to Sudan, Cleo Noél, charges des affaires George Moore and the Belgium aid, Guy Eid in Khartoum - and much more. I am sure the list of particulars could go on for hundreds of pages. I think the world would be interested in one document which gathered all of Yassir Arafat’s crimes against humanity. This compendium should also include charts showing the connecting linkage to the dozens of terrorist organization world-wide and the nations who funded his Terror. This chart should also document the connections Arafat has with sources of funding from the U.S., Europe and elsewhere.

Arafat compiled a well documented record of war crimes and/or crimes against humanity in Lebanon. There are documents, photographs and numerous witnesses who observed the atrocities committed by the PLO under Arafat’s orders and control. (As a relevant aside, Arafat’s M.O. - Modus Operandi - is again being re-established in the territories handed over to him by the Rabin-Peres Olso Accords. Time Magazine published an in-depth report, describing the creeping Lebanonization of these areas which further proves that Arafat utilizes crimes against humanity, to include his own people, as a method of his control over them.)

During the 12 year Civil War in Lebanon, caused by Yassir Arafat’s assuming power through terror, his terrorists committed mass murder. Whole villages of Christians like Damour were massacred, chopped into pieces with machetes. Out of the 30,000 Christians, 10,000 were slaughtered by Arafat’s PLO. The town was then occupied and kept as Arafat’s stronghold. David Shipler of the New York Times wrote the story of Damour June 21, 1982. There were individual murders. One horrific, but typical, example is when the Muktar (leader) of a village refused to be cooperative with Arafat and his terrorists. The Muktar’s teenage daughter was abducted and raped. Her breasts were cut off and she was delivered to the doorstep of her father in a sack.

In any hospital controlled by Arafat’s terrorists, captured Christians became live blood banks for wounded Palestinians. Israeli soldiers who captured these hospitals found bodies drained of all their blood and stacked, like cordwood, in the hallways.

Arafat’s Terrorists set up their offensive positions and weapons’ depots on the tops of hospitals, schools, nurseries, inside of churches, etc. They recruited 10-12 year old kids, armed them with Rocket Propelled Grenades and used them to stop the Israeli soldiers who were killed because they wouldn’t shoot at these RPG kids. This is again being done today as Arafat provides free terrorist training in children’s summer camps as displayed on Palestinian Authority TV and as shown in the New York Times.

When the Israelis entered Lebanon after countless cross-border terror attacks by Arafat’s PLO, they found huge tunnels, concrete bunkers loaded with weapons and plans for the coming war against Israel. It took hundreds of trucks to decant these mountainous weapons’ stores. Here again Arafat is stockpiling massive quantities of weapons smuggled in from Egypt - with Egyptian help or did Egypt just look the other way.

There is much more, documented and with photos - but, you get the idea.

He gave the go ahead via shortwave radio for Black September
to murder US Ambassador to Sudan Cleo Noel
and US Diplomat George Curtis Moore on 2 March, 1973
in Khartoum, Sudan.

How's that for starters?

To give you a slightly more in-depth answer than everyone who said "because he was a terrorist asshole".... (which I dont disagree with...)

He is credited for being the "father" of modern terrorism.

Back in the early 1990s he had a legitimate opportunity to create a Palestinian state through the Camp David negotiations - he was offered 97% of the occupied territories - a pretty sweet deal, which he rejected. The sides were all but a handshake away from a permanent peace settlement and he walked away from it. He had always been a supporter of terrorism from day one, but from that point on, everyone realized that he wasn't about peace - that his actions showed he wouldn't accept peace in the Middle East with Israel still in existence.

He was elected to head the PLO in 1969, after years of fighting as a Palestinian guerilla. At the same time he took office, militant terrorist Palestinian groups formed in the PLO. He and the PLO were blamed for all sorts of terroist attacks, including the 1972 attack on Israeli athletes in Munich. After this he shut down the arm of the PLO responsible for the attack because it attracted too much bad publicicty, and he denied involvement in terrorist attacks. This is what the pattern was over the years - denounce Israel, terrorist attack, deny involvement, condemn terrorism, maybe arrest some militants (usually let them go right away), and then do it again. Kind of played both sides. Some believed at times he had little control over the terrorist wings of the PLO - and maybe he didn't control all of their actions, Hamas certainly carried out attacks as it pleased, but to say he didn't support terrorism is a lie. Interestingly enough, some of the hard core terrorist groups though of him as an Israeli collaborator - shows that there are in fact badder fish in the sea. By the end of it all he was seen just as a roadblock to peace (by the west and Israel) or to victory (by radical Palestinians).

Anyways, in a nutshell - father of modern terrorism, the Palestinian cause, rejected peace deal, half-hearted attempts to "control" terrorists, roadblock to peace in the ME. Hopefully, Abbas will gain legitimacy and we might be able to get something done.

"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" is how Reagan put it.

He really brought the Palestinian cause into the light - to some people, he is a hero. Without him, the Palestinians would probably be nowhere. The people who think he's great though tend to forget many of the terrible things he did (or they attempt to justify them) - and they forget that he had a chance at peace and rejected it.

There are always people who like assholes like this. Bin Laden is the same way - he's a terrorist murderer, but he brought attention to a cause that a lot of people believe in. He's an underdog who stuck it to the most powerful country in the world and is popular because of it. For have-nots who eat sand for breakfast, they like to see those of us living in freedom and peace suffer a little too.  I think its a jealousy thing too - which explains why some people in Europe feel that we deserved what we got.

Anyways, it helps to see things from the other side, to understand why some people admire these assholes - then use that information to help put these assholes in the ground.

He was part of the secular/socialist 'national independence' Soviet-sponsored phase of terrorism from the 50s through the 80s, along with people like Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe, Che Guevera, Fidel Castro, Ahmed Ben Bella and others.  Arafat was probably the most notorious of his contemporaries, but they were all equally loathsome.

Don't let your self get all hyped up into thinking Arafat is some special sort of monster.  There are others just as bad.  Of them all, I personally find Mandela the most vile.  To see this Communist terrorist turned into an idol of human rights is truly nauseating.  And for sheer barbarity, Mugabe and his thugs set a pretty low standard for rapes, mutilations, burning people alive, ect.

One more thing that pisses me off about Arafat and the whole "Palestine" thing is this tidbit that most people either don't know or have "conviently" forgot about...

www.cdn-friends-icej.ca/isreport/july02/exist.html

Way back on March 31, 1977, the Dutch newspaper Trouw published an interview with Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee member Zahir Muhsein. Here's what he said:

The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism.

For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa, while as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan.

He made any hope for peace between Israel and the Arabs impossible, he was a liar, he designed the suicide bomb campaign and brainwashed a generation of children with hatred, and he stole most of the money the EU, US, and UN gave the Palestinian people for himself.  He tried to overthrow  the Jordanian government after they took the PLO and hundreds of thousands of Palestinaian refugees in.  Arafat repaid his host by trying to murder him.  He exacerbated the civil war in Lebanon after the Jordanians expelled him there. He invented modern international terrorism as we know it today.  He was also a homosexual.

He was an evil cancer and blight to his people and upon humanity in general.  Naturally, he's hugely popular in Europe and the UN.
