I have a YHM QD .30 Phantom suppressor sitting in my safe unused and I'm kicking around building a smallish AR10 in .308 for shits and giggles. I've spec-ed out an Aero M5 receiver set and their 15" Atlas rail, a Toolcraft dual ejector BCG, and a Faxon Big Gunner profile, 16" barrel. I can't decide if I want to go w/ a fixed A1 stock or something collapsible.

Someone talk me off this ledge...

Build one with an 18" barrel. 16" wastes too much powder. Problem solved.

About 50 fps mv.  I prefer 16" for my use.

If you have a good quality suppressor, a 308 sbr is not a bad option if you're willing to reload and tune the gas and buffer systems

Tag, I've been considering something like this for a while now, and have been researching receiver sets and trying to decide if I should piece one together, or drop a couple grand and buy a pre-made one...

Don't build one, just buy a Ruger SFAR.

It handles MUCH better than a standard large frame and you'll want the weight savings with a suppressor on the end.

Don’t build a 16 inch .308 AR10

Build a 10 inch .308 AR10 sbr instead

This.  It is not so much power lost as it is muzzle blast if you ever have to shoot it without hearing protection / suppression.  The difference is VERY VERY noticeable.

Goes from painfully loud (18 inch) to HOLY FUCK THAT FUCKING HURTS loud (16 inch)

Do you already have .308/7.62x51 ammo and/or reloading supplies already?

I like cartridge interchangeability but depends what you already own. YMMV.

Had a  P/W 16" .308 and it was a solid rifle....... after figuring out the gas adj, spring weight, and buffer weight.  Ran fine afterward suppressed and unsuppressed.

Still have a 18" and a 12.5".  Those actually run well and required less fussing with weights and gas adj.

Build a 12.5” with Thermal instead

I like shooting my 16" Aero, but not as big of a fan of carrying it.  It's about 13 lbs with the can on it and a 10 round mag.  Could be worse, but if I was doing it over again, I'd have gone lighter on everything to drop a few lbs.  It's fine for a while, but I was definitely ready to put it down after carrying it hunting for the day.  I can't talk you out of it, because they're fun rifles, as long as you don't mind the weight.

Get the aero bcg instead of the toolcraft. It is ramped and will fit the lower receiver better.

Is the ramp better than the dual ejectors?  When I built a precision AR10 in 6.5CM, the dual ejector was THE thing that supposedly helped it run.

16" is my favorite length in a semi-auto .308. You lose less than 100 fps from an 18 and less than 150 fps from a 20" but you gain a handier rifle. Even better if you can find a rifle length gas barrel. My M5 build will have a Criterion whenever I get around to finishing it.

My 716i with a Dead Air Sandman S, Dead Air 3 prong, Kahles K16i, Nightforce 1.375" Unimount, SSA-E, B5 SOPMOD Bravo, H3 buffer and Ergo Grip. Without the can it weights all of 9lb 7 ounces. Optic and mount combo weighs about 22 ounces putting the rifle without optic at around 8lb 1oz; with the stock H2 buffer it's 8lbs on the money. Ruger SFAR is supposed to be 6lb 13 oz. Never once did I think "Gee I wish rifle weighed 1lb 4oz less" when when I carried it last hunting season climbing canyons for miles and miles. If anything the can was the biggest annoyance when scrambling canyons or pushing through scrub oak, took it off more than once for those instances due to the length. The 716i was the lightest rifle in my party because everyone else had traditional bolt guns with heavy glass. "Don't be a bitch" applies.
