So apparently this stuff isn't meant to be swallowed so does that mean i'm going to develop some strange affliction from swallowing so much over the years now!!

It is phenol. Diluted but still phenol. Look up the MSDS of phenol. Or look on the bottle. POISON. There are some here that think guar gum, potassium persulfate and hydrochloric acid are deadly poisons. These are relatively safe compared to phenol. Dilute and in small quantities, it is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase (the first enzyme pathway in ethanol metabolization) to benzaldehyde which is what flavors Amaretto. From there , it is further oxidized by acetylaldehyde dehydrogenase to benzoic acid where it can be processed by the liver to hippuric acid where it is excreted by the kidneys. Biochem lesson for today is over |

Biochem lesson for today is over I'll tell you my story of Chloraceptic: The first day of Gross Anatomy in med school we were introduced to our cadavers. The preservative solution used to embalm the cadavers contained phenol. If you had a particularly long session handling the cadaver, your hands would start to tingle and go numb from the phenol. I knew that phenol was toxic since I was a chemistry major so I wasn't particularly happy about it. One of the pathology professors, Dr. Michael Binder, had warned us never to eat our cadaver. It seemed like a simple enough request. Phenol also has a very characteristic smell. It is strong but not necessarily unpleasant, and the aromatic smell from that point forward became associated in my mind with dead bodies (along with the usual dead body smells from decay that I became acquainted with while doing a forensic pathology rotation). Fast forward to a very sore throat from a viral pharyngitis, I sprayed some Chloraceptic in the back of my throat and the taste and smell brought me right back to Gross Anatomy. I had just eaten my cadaver. |

Modern formulas use benzocaine anyway so no need to poop yourself. |
