Hey guys, I am looking at getting a surround sound setup for my apartment to hook up to my tv, PS3, etc. I am looking at staying under $400. I had a roommate that had a Logitech Z-5500 a few years ago and really liked it. I know it has since been discontinued and replaced with the Z906. So I have been checking out the Z906 a little bit. Anyone here have any experiences with them? Any other systems to check out?

Thanks!

I believe the way to go is to start with a decent receiver and build from there. You can get a used Denon receiver pretty cheap and and add a set of decent speakers and a sub for under $400 if you shop around. Over time, upgrade components as you have money.

My suggestion: http://www.amazon.com/Denon-DHT-391XP-Channel-Theater-System/dp/B003QP3M92/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1344278643&sr=8-3&keywords=denon+htib.

The sub could be better but I'm sure my neighbors wouldn't approve if it was.

I'll look up the system I have.

Yamaha reciever, speakers. Remember: if your reciever has a built-in DVD player, the speakers are most likely proprietary and you will not be able to replace/upgrade them.

I have one similar to this:

Crutchfield

I'll look up the exact specs when I'm home. I got mine on Amazon, 30% off and of course free shipping.

Your $400 will go a lot further with real, gently loved, equipment found on Craigslist.

I'm into HiFi, vacuum tubes and horns, but my HT system is mostly mass market––mainly Denon receivers (3 over 13 years) and a nice set of Canadian Paradigm Studio 20s, ADP-170s, CC450 and PS1200 sub.  My source is a PS3 80gb v1 that plays SACDs in multi-channel.

Logitech makes mouses and keyboards, so I don't know about them.  My first Gateway Destination computer ('97) came with a little Harmon Kardon/Infinity surround sound system that was pretty good for the time (Dolby Pro Logic.)  Even if you get a dedicated entry level HT receiver from the big boys, you can look for some decent speakers, but $400 ain't going to buy you much, not even a 'good' 'home theatre in a box' type packages.

But I guess, anything's better than what you have now.

Something like this would fit the bill nicely:
