I have a Surefire G2 LED light.  It is nearly new, and on it's first set of batteries.  Lately, the light output seemed less than before, then when using it for any period of time, it would visibly get dimmer to the point of going out.  No problem, I go buy new batteries today at Lowe's.  2019 expiration date.  I put the batteries in, and the light output is weak still, and if you use it for any period of time, it gets visibly weaker.

Is it the batteries, and the new ones were bad?  Or do I have another issue?

The G2L has thermal protection to dim it when it gets too hot.  This should take place only after about 5 minutes and the dimming is not very noticeable.

Does your G2L have a metal head or a plastic head?  Some of the very early ones had plastic heads and would heat up faster.  Outside of that, if you think there is a problem, contact SF.  You may have to send it in, but they will make it right.

Seriously? It only outputs at 80 lumens right? I don't get it... My polytac led outputs at 120 lumens and I can run that thing for an hour straight.

It is about 15 months old.  It has a metal head.  This occurs almost immediately.  I just went in and got the light.  It was sitting on top of my safe in a 65 degree room.  I hadn't touched it for two hours, so it was cool.  I turned it on, and a freakin match would be brighter. In the entire time I have had it, I doubt I ever had it on for more than 3 or 4 minutes straight.

I did not know if anyone had run into anything like this before.  I will have to try their customer service.

That was just an option, but it definitely should not be shutting down like that under normal circumstances.  I would say to try a known good set of batteries, preferably SF batt's, but sometimes you have to settle.  I have several G2's with the plastic heads and they work great with the stock lamps (LED) and with Malkoff lamps (definitely recommend).

The original batteries were SF, and the replacements I bought today were SF batteries.  I realize that batteries can go bad/be bad, even if bought new.  The expiration date is March 2019 on the new ones.

Yes seriously.  The thermal protection should only knock it down 15 lumens or so.  It should run close to an hour though after that without dimming.

I've run my G2 for nine hours straight. It shouldn't be doing what is described.

G2/6P is great for battery life.

I have had one for a little over a year.  It does the same thing.  I use it daily and it goes like this:  New batteries = high output for the first hour of there life.  Then ten more hours of output that dims slowly to nill starting after about the first ten seconds.  Out of curiosity, did you buy yours at Lowe's hardware?

I am wondering if my original batteries were even bad.  I am not digging thru kitty litter and trash to find out though.  If this light has some form of electronics in it, then it stands to reason that it could fail.  I will try Customer Service and report back.

By the way, I was looking on the SF website, and they have new lights.  The G2X and 6PX look killer....and 200 lumens.  $55 and $69 respectively.  Looks like I will be trying one of those once I get this issue sorted out.

I bought the light about 15 months ago at Town Police Supply.  The replacement batteries were bought today at Lowes.

In looking back over the first 15 months, I would have to say that it nearly mirrored what you are saying about yours.  I doubt I have more than one hour total time on it though, as it sits on my nightstand ready to light up a bump in the night.  When I put the new batteries in tonight, it was not bright really from the first second I turned it on, and started dimming within ten seconds maybe.  In less than one minute total time, it is dimmer than a match.

Just now I shined it in my face and you can see the LED flicker or pulse a little.  It is so dim, with new batteries, that I am not seeing spots like you would if it was working right.

The 200 lumen monsters don't have the battery life of the P60L series.

The way I look at it, the 6PX would make a good weapon light. But the 12 hour battery life of the P60L equipped G2/6P is very useful too. Also, you can't change the bulb on the X series. Which can be handy.

The best throw in a handy light still belongs to the E2DL.

OK, an update about the light.  I called Surefire's Customer Service department and told them about the light.  I was given a Return Authorization, and the light will be going back tomorrow.  The guy was very nice, and this was about the easiest dealing I have ever had with a customer service department.  I will give another update when I get it back.

EDIT*****The number for their CS department is 1-800-828-8809.  This will cost me just the price to ship it back.  Surefire will handle the rest.  I see now that at least two others are having the same type of problem with the same light, so I think there is something up with this model.
