So 2 years ago I worked out hard lifting, boxing, running etc, and actually got kind of strong. I am thinking maybe if I took some type of supplements I would have gotten stronger, but that is in the past now. Anyway I am making plans to build a home gym with a power rack bench etc, and wondering If I should add some supplements like muti-vitamin. What are your thoughts on supplements and do you take them when you workout? ETA: I took Centrum muti-vitamin 2 years ago when I was working out too, and some times take it present day. ETA#2: I am a skinny guy 5"11 165 and 2 years ago I was 145. |

Most of the noobs out there take way too many supplements and waste a whole ton of money.
That being said, I take a select few high quality supplement that really have made a difference. I've tried just about everything over the years. BCAA/EAA amino acid supplement while fasting (HumaPro) Protein/carb shake right before my workout Supercharged multi-vitamin with digestive and joint protection complexes (Orange Triad) Oil supplement (GNC Triple Strength Fish Oil + Krill) Creatine |

Quoted: Protien BCAA's (I like recovery/intra workout drinks, not pills) Pre-Workout if I am feeling sluggish, not for every workout. Really, you can just eat more, take a multi, and lift heavy. That is probably the route I'll take again, but might add a protein supplement. |

Reply to EasTexn. I don't lift so that is why I am asking. It's an inside joke from another forum, Teh Misc over at bodybuilding.com, kinda like GD here at Arfcom. Anyways, OP, if you're just getting back into the swing of things with a home gym, I'd recommend: 1) A basic multi. NOW Adam is cheap and has good doses from good sources (the vitamin source is usually key, high doses of crap doesn't do much for you). There is no proof they actually help, but it just covers the bases in case you have a small deficiency that can have a BIG impact 2) Protein. Doesn't need to be fancy or expensive. There are a million and one brands. Don't buy from GNC, it's all overpriced. Nutraplanet.com has decent prices, Amazon can too if you know what you're looking for. I really like Muscle Pharm Combat, great taste, solid blend. TruTein is also very popular and is open with their blends, no proprietary crap on their label, simple solid ingredients. You don't need to take 10 scoops a day, 2 scoops before or after your work is just fine. 3) Creatine monohydrate. Don't get the fancy new esters and all that crap. Creatine monohydrate, 5g per day. You can buy a $20 container that will last you a year. Throw it in your protein shake. 4) Fish oil. This is mainly for overall health, but is also cheap. Get a high concentration (triple strength) and take 2-3 caps a day. Recommended doses are always WAY too low. |

Thanks for the write up I'll be taking your advice seriously.

5800 posts and your asking if you should take a multi vitamin? Welcome to 1968. ![]() My old boxing coach said it is overlooked and helped him a lot, and no he is not from the 60's. Yeah he's saying you should have started taking a multi a long time ago... Diet is the most important thing. Definitely start taking a multivitamin and supplementing with some whey protein. I would recommend drinking a 30gram protein shake within 30 minutes of completing a workout. Other than that you can look into glutamine for recovery and other essential amino acids that aid in protein synthesis. Fish oil is another staple you should look into. I'm no expert but in my experience this is what I would recommend. Whatever you decide to take, make sure to do your own research and know exaclty what you are putting into your body and for what purpose. |

This also. Rippetoe Starting Strength -> Dogcrapp 5x5 -> 5/3/1 Spend a year doing each and you'll be strong as hell. |

Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Protein Creatine mono Pre workout (maybe) That's all one needs. Dude, did you really leave out fish oil? ![]() That stuff is double plus good, even if you don't even lift. Eat fish. For starters, I don't like it enough to eat it every day. Once a week at best, but usually just a couple times a month. |

You can't argue with chemistry, they do work.
But with that said, are there side effects with some of these compounds? Absolutely. Unless you're absolutely strapped for cash, get the best/highest rated supplements you can find. The ones I use run $50-70 for a container that lasts 3-4 weeks, but they do a fantastic job doing what they're designed to do. And I don't need to worry about waking up with shrunken balls or a B-cup either.

Protein shake for breakfast Fish oil, potassium gluconate, B complex, D3, multivitamin, glucosamine/chondroiton/msm all in the morning. Vitamins ftw OG USP Labs Jack3d pre-workout with another 5g of generic GNC creatine mixed in. Protein after workout 200-500mg test cypionate a week (Scrip) 1mg adex a week (Scrip) 500iu HCG a week (Scrip) I may or may not be considering adding a couple Nor 19's to the mix. Some nandrolone for the joints would be nice. Tren always helps. Haven't committed to doing anything non-scrip yet. I like being legal if pricey. 5'9, Sitting at 255 right now, 20%. Bulking out thru May then cut thru summer when the weather's good for outdoor cardio. Shooting for 220 at 10-12%. |

Still got a lot to strip off. I mean I'm only 205 lean under the flub. I'd like to dose it up and pile on another 15 and then cut. Cross fingers and hope it's all still there once I peel the blubber off. |
