Oh, I thought OP was referring to his son. Like when I was 9 years old and lit a highway flare in the house.

So am I going to just have trouble getting AM radio or do I need to tell my wife that I'm starting my apocalyptic soccer mom harem? |

Back in the day I used to work at a LORAN-C control center. X class flares cresated a very specific patern on the time charts.
The time chart scale was measured in nanoseconds, essentially comparison between different recievers hundreds of miles apart and compared with three atomic clocks. We had a phone number to the national space weather center. We always knew about solar flares about 10 minutes before they did Something about the initial shockwave slightly compressing our ionosphere causing a change in the amount of time it took for radio waves to travel a few hundred miles. We could also tune recievers to measure the 2nd and 3rd pass of the radio waves around the planet, flares really stood out there. |

Look on the bright side, all the assholes holding billions in stocks and crypto are gonna get wiped out.

Cool, earth directed CME. If you live up north, watch the skies this weekend.

Not surprising. The sunspots coming in to view looked pretty active a couple of days ago when they first came into sight.

Quoted: Exciting! Some HAM guy will be able to compare notes about hemorrhoids with a guy on the other side of the planet through a static connection, and then log in his contact book. View Quote Attached File |

All of the good auroras that might be visible in southern New England happen when it's overcast and rainy here.
As if on cue... |

These are the things the mission to Mars people have to plan for. I'll be dead by the time we land there, so...

Well if we can't get a meteor to reset things, I guess solar flares will have to do.

Quoted: :Product: Forecast Discussion :Issued: 2021 Oct 28 1230 UTC # Prepared by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Solar Activity .24 hr Summary... Solar activity reached moderate levels. Region 2887 (S26W03, Dhi/beta-gamma) developed a few more intermediate spots, mainly near the trailer portion of the region, and produced an M1/1N flare (R1-Minor) at 28/0740 UTC and an M2/1F flare at 28/1028 UTC. This region was also responsible for several C-class flares early in the period. Four other numbered regions remain on the visible disk. Region 2891 (N18E60, Cao/beta) continued to rotate into view, but has changed little while decreasing in overall activity. Region 2886 (S19W62, Hsx/alpha), Region 2889 (S23E23, Bxo/beta), and Region 2890 (S18W46, Bxo/beta) all exhibited decay and were inactive throughout the period. At approximately 26/2024 UTC a CME was observed off the Suns SE limb by LASCO C2. As this CME propagated outward, it appeared to have a very faint SW component as observed in STEREO-A. The source region is not clear, but a possible candidate is dimming near region 2887 just after 26/1900 UTC. Initial analysis and model run indicate a glancing blow late on 30 Oct. Additional analysis was conducted, but it too resulted in a low confidence outcome. .Forecast... Solar activity is expected to continue at low levels, with a slight chance for R1-R2 (Minor-Moderate) radio blackouts on 28 Oct. As most of the regions continue to decay, conditions are expected to return to very low levels, with C-Flares likely and a continued slight chance for an isolated M-class flare. more at https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/forecast-discussion View Quote Why give a summary in a hundreth of a day format? |

The problem with this sunspot group is it has been getting all twisted up to hell the last few days and blowing off a few flares building to this X1.
ETA Nevermind it’s barrel is pointed right at us. |

We need a klaxon symbol and a Panic Sub Forum.
So we know when to assemble....so we can panic in an orderly fashion and such. While I love panic, I abhor mess and untidiness. |
