My computer's primary HD is dying.  The OS is currently on the dying drive.

I have a secondary HD with two partitions.  P1 is 6Gb, and I have cleaned all the visible files off it.  P2 is 54Gb, and contains a LOT of data that I need, and which I don't have time to back up onto CDs.

Can I install Win98SE onto the cleaned partition without destroying the data on the second partition?

Yep,

Just don't format P2 before you install 98.

Remove (or disable in BIOS) the old drive, set P1 as the "active" partition and install 98 on P1.

Edited because I read your post wrong.

And make sue to make the second partition "active".

Thanks -- second partition or first partition, though??  I want the OS on P1, the cleaned one.

My boss is an ex-nuke (subs) and we work for a major ISP....he said:

Kleetus: oh absolutely you can install 98 to the cleaned parition...

as long as they as different partitions..you should be fine

satcong: Anything else I need to tell him?

nope...run fdisk on the hard drive and make sure the cleaned partition is made active
kleetus88: has an 'a' flag...
