Anyone else out there just stick with the M4 or Magpul hand guard and A2 sight their rife came with?

I just bought these two rifles in October, a Colt LE6920 and a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport II, and they both came with the Magpul MOE SL furniture. It seems good enough to me really. I can add M-Lok accessories if I want, seems functional enough and I think it looks nice enough.

I was all set to add free float hand guards to these rifles but now I’m thinking fuck it, they’re fine the way they are. Am I alone here?

The rifles in question

If it works for your purposes, why change.

Nothing wrong with delta rings and polymer. Those are CQB rifles, not precision rigs.

My 6920 has SL handguard and stock too.  Big fan, works great for that rifle.  I have other rifles that wear G/SMR, CMR, & Larue rails.  I don't think you need to freefloat all the things.

Only for the one I leave in my vehicle... It's not bad, you can run a grip and flash light on it well enough.

Magpul SL handguards are GTG. Why fix it if it isn't broken? Take all the money that GD would convince you to spend on some high end Tier 1 operator rail and buy ammo.

Freefloat it and put Magpul handguards on it.

My main carbine is a Stag 3 with Gen1 Magpul MOE handguards that I had to drill into to install an IWC flaslight mount.  They work fine.

Love the MOE-SL on my SBR.  Solid as a rock, lightweight, great feel.

I'm going to sort of have to disagree with you there.

For a non-nostalgia 6920, I really would advised picking up a Daniel Defense Omega.  It is easy to install, and compared to normal handguards it basically weighs the same, is tougher, allows better ventilation for the barrel, is lower in profile, has free floating, and a better mounting system.  Otherwise just get a lower FSB and a long free-float MLOK tube.
Link Posted: 11/13/2017 4:12:55 PM EDT
[#10]
No reason to change rifles if you already have the FSB, but I would never buy/build without a FF handguard.
Link Posted: 11/13/2017 4:14:11 PM EDT
[#11]
Depends. For simple rifles with just a WML, I love poly handguards. More stuff is going to require more real estate which usually is FF rails.
I’m not a fan of FF, but do have a few simply for the space they provide.

I really like the look of the Magpul sl but not sure about the Carbine length. I like the midlength and was thinking of an M&P15 MOE SL, plus you get the sweet Magpul stamped lower.

Also wish Colt did a 6720 with MOE SL but I don’t even think they are making the 6720 anymore.

My favorite gun has colt hand guards with a flashlight mounted to the FSP. No need for rails with that gun.

Those are magpul handguards?

Wow what happened to them?

If they were my rifles, I would leave them as they sit. They are ready for their weapon lights.

If you desire a freefloat handguard, just create a whole new upper, barrel and all that. Then you have a good excuse to build a new lower to go along with it.

My Colt 733 SBR has 7 hole plastic hand guards. My Colt 727 SBR has M4 handguards. My LMT SBR has a Larue 7.0 rail. I have a Spike's dissipator build with regular A2 forearm and a few spare uppers.  I don't feel a need for long rails. I have a few KAC RIS and RAS rails for when I feel like I need rails.

OP, where did you get the Sport with MOE SL? Or did you put that on there?

They work, they're cheap, and they're light. If I don't need to attach accessories, then I don't need a metal handguard.

I put together a mid-length rifle based on the MOE SL furniture because I loved the way it felt (not a fan of the regular fat MOE furniture). It's now the first one I grab when I go shooting. I say if you like it, keep it.

This is a rare case where I prefer the aesthetics of the OEM part over Magpul's. The style just doesn't fit well in an AR-15 but looks amazing in an ACR imo.

I used to be able to get use M4 RAS's for $50 a pop, so I have those on my go to guns. And I got one of those Surefire handguard with light things for free recently. Otherwise I'd have no problem with M4 or Magpul handguards.

I bought it that way. It came to the gun store in "Featureless" form, which is one method of compliance here in California. I didn't want featureless, I opted for the fixed magazine option, so the gun store put the MOE SL package together for me. The Colt, however, came from the factory with the MOE SL stuff already on it.

With the fixed mag we just use these babies to load, keep them around like magazines.

Well, the trend is to build the platforms light again, but you already skipped that part with those barrels.

I don't see a problem with it.

ARegularGuy and InRangeTV have both addressed cutting out the weight of the handguards recently.

Yes. I stuck a Midwest Industries rail on the FSB to allow a light, and I’m running it with just irons and M4 handguards.
Trouble is, I’ve got a big Harris bipod and a foregrip or two that I need to either use or sell.

Yea, Smith or Ruger should do a lightweight barrel version. Ruger has the MPR covering the DMR/3gun setup. Maybe even a pinned LW 14.5 AR556 or Sport would be pretty cool.

What kina wizardry was that?!!?

You poor basterds. I hope Cali doesn't pass some bs law banning speed load devices.  Making any device that speeds up or aids in reloading  a firearm.

I like the MagPul furniture. Cheap price and looks good IMHO. Decent furniture for a $400 gun.

If I had started with a rifle that had an A2 gas block I probably wouldn't have free floated it. I actually like the look and will probably get an upper like that at some point.

Is that the same rail that's on the Springfield Saint?  That is a really nice looking rail, wish it was M-Lok though.

Lightweight and functional, but ugly.

I had the old style on a 6920 I bought.  Frankly, it was great.

- Rock solid - no wiggle
- Rugged - can really take a hit
- Comfortable to hold - no cheese grater effect
- Fairly lightweight
- Accommodates a range of mounting options
- Heat shield let me shoot all afternoon without gloves

And bonus points, they are inexpensive.

So yeah, no reason to replace it.  But after a couple of years, I got bored and did - with a free float DD Omega.  Because sometimes I have more money than sense.

On the right, original MOE handguard:

Same AR with DD Omega:

Still not sure it was an improvement, but whatever.

Next up I’m going to add a light mount. Maybe a sling mount too. Magpul put a sling mount in their buttstock but not their hand guard. I can’t figure that out unless the idea was to sell sling mounts.

@RDTCU Did you just stick a handguard endcap behind a low profile gas block? Is that how you got that look? The bottom rifle looks real sexy to me. I'd love to see a parts list.

I don't care for the MOE SL handguards. They extend too far past the end cap for my liking. I still use the original MOE style. I use a VTac 2 point sling with an M4 front sling adapter. I couldn't do that with the SL.

Why not use a USGI M203 "side mount" sling adaptor?

I think the old ones look good, but the ones in the OP are fugly. I know, function over form.

The old ones looked great:

Honestly I'd think these are fine for 90% of all AR users. It mounts a light just fine. It mounts a bipod, probably just as good. Unless you're using a laser, have an obscenely long scope + NV optics / thermals, I don't see why you would need it. Maybe free floating would help, but you'd need good ammo, a proper barrel, trigger and whatnot. And I'd assume the vast majority of ARs are not set up for that kind of role. For a regular carbine it makes a lot of sense.
