It seems that most people have enjoyed the new Star Trek movie and only a few disliked it, and thought I'ld find out.

WTF was up with Scotty's friend? (The alien with the wooden head.)
Overall I'd say it was pretty good, but the action shots were too closeand reduced the overall enjoyment of the movie. This is a trend that I'd like to see go away. Transformers was the greatest offender, but there have certainly been others. |

Way too many plot holes.
Way too many common sense holes. Way too many Star Trek clichés. That might seem to be an odd thing to say about a Star Trek movie. But they seemed forced. It would be like a Godzilla movie where a random Asian guy points at the sky and shouts “Oh No!!! Godzilla!” One or two things like that in a movie might be acceptable but when they hit you with them nonstop it gets distracting. I sort of see the movie as a fourteen year olds fantasy about what it would be like to be Captain Kirk. That doesn’t make it a bad movie, in fact I enjoyed it quite a bit. But it wasn’t a Star Trek movie. (Of course I thought that most of the Star Trek movies sucked, so take that for what it’s worth.) |

I saw it last night.
Excellent. I liked it a bunch. Good time. (Except for the dang popcorn and coke prices) 
We usually take a bit of candy in or go to the drive in. It had been awhile since I stood in line at the concession stand. Ouch. |

I hated it. the plot was lame, the excuse for getting the action going in the beginning was flaky, the characters were immature, greedy and immoral. the cinematography was great, but so is everything else nowadays- it's about par for 2009. the scenes with Scotty were amusing, too bad the rest of the movie wasn't as redeeming. thankfully they didn't lay on the nostalgia thick at all with Spock. it was nice that he was upbeat about his situation. the most groundbreaking thing about the movie was the novel approach that Nimoy used in portraying 50% of the emotions of his character entirely through the use of his eyebrows. fascinating.
although spartan, the Star Trek First Generation episodes had more interesting plots that required a brain to appreciate. the special effects were tame compared to those of 40 years later and the action was limited to what was appropriate for TV, but it fit the characters and generally was satisfying. compared to those, this latest movie was ill proportioned. I'd say the screenwriters and actors of this movie failed to live up to their predecesors. |

My biggest complaint with the movie was the portrayal of the (24th century) Romulans did not line up AT ALL with the portrayal of the Romulans from either the next gen or the original series. They seemed more like the Remans from Nemesis. Some of the other technology also seemed a bit off to me (the red fluid that created black holes?). I was also shocked by the major upset to the time line caused by the destruction of Vulcan (where's the USS Relativity when you need it?). However ambassador Spock mentioned a new planet that he had found for a new Vulcan colony. If this new planet were to be renamed Vulcan the upset to the time line wouldn't be nearly as severe! OK, call me a nitpicker!  MAX |

I'm probably one of the few here that watched Star Trek TOS during it's first run. I left my preconceptions at the door. Screw the timeline. I tried to evaluate the movie without comparing it to TOS. I thought the movie was great. Good acting, good casting. My wife and I both liked it. I knew it was going to be a good move when Kirk rolled off the Orion girl. I laughed my ass off!JJ Abrams did a great job of honoring the Star Trek mythology. The franchise grew stale when Picard took his "Shakespeare in Space" nonsense to the big screen. Abrams gave the franchise a photon torpedo in the behind to wake it up and give it life. This movie was a fun ride. I hope there are more in the works. |

I don't have a problem with suspension of disbelief (I was a huge Battlestar Galatica fan, and I really like Firefly/Serenity, heck I think the Chronicles of Riddick is an awesome movie, and I really liked Alien Resurrection - and in general I am pretty forgiving of Sci-Fi, because I love the genre), but I just thought there were a number of instances in the plot where the story was just totally half-assed, in the sense that the writers could have made it much more credible and coherent with just a LITTLE more effort, but simply couldn't be bothered - presumably because they knew they had a guaranteed audience, and the action-filled thrill ride would make plenty of people happy. Also - I am NOT some hard-core trekkie that is all bent out of shape because they violated canon, and just snapped their fingers and said ""Ta-daa! Alternate timeline!" - I'm not really a huge fan of the original series, and I'm pretty sure I've not even seen all of the original episodes. It was still enjoyable, and fun to watch, I'm not saying it was terrible (like Battlefield Earth, for example), I'm just saying it wasn't a particularly good movie other than a mindless summer action flick. |

Looks like more people are putting this in the "excellent" catagory then anything,frankly I hope we blow the old Trek out of the water and start anew

Already posted a thread about this: Linky and ultimately I was disappointed. The writing was flaccid at best. I know it would be the equivalent of throwing a slab of bloody meat into a wolf pack, but I really wish the studios would let the fanboys write (or at least contribute to) scripts. As noted, they just used the TOS framework to loosely tell a story, with a weak connection at best. Oh, and the actor playing young Spock is, in real life, an Obongo penis-sucker. /thread. Oh part II: Uhura in TOS was way hotter! This Uhura was a scrawny fuck! A woman should have some flesh on her! Vanessa Del Rio FTMFW!!!! |

My point was that we never saw that many Vucans anyway. It is possible that the planet was lost in the time line that we are all so familiar with and that it was just never mentioned on screen. |

The whole point of this exercise was to seperate this movie and subsequent movies from that timeline. This way there is a blank slate so that hopefully we can have somewhat grittier stories with fewer hippies in them. |

I thought it was an excellent movie, it kept my attention locked the whole time. The story was a bit weak, however, and it bothered me that noone on Vulcan or earth thought to shoot that drill a few times. I mean wtf.
I think it's just the natural trend of so-called "good movies" to become more and more reliant on special effects and less concerned about the content of a good storyline. |
