Anyone know where to go to get an old stamp collection appraised?  Had a great-uncle pass many years ago and now my parents have the collection.  They're asking me if I have any ideas on what to do with it.  I don't think many folks are into that sort of thing anymore, but who knows...I figured GD would be the place to ask :)

I found this: http://stamps.org/dallas, near me...any better options out there?

Thanks guys!

There was a thread about this last week.

Whatever you do, do not send it to an appraiser if you do not understand the documentation and organization method used by the collector. They will steal your stamps. We had inherited a extremely old stamp collection of the very earliest american stamps and the family members who did not understand it, sent it in for appraisal and it got robbed blind. My mother understood the organization method used and was able to ID what was stolen, but could not get the stamps back. I hate to think of how much they are worth these days.

At the very least document every thing by taking pictures of the pages and making sure they are very good clear pictures of the stamp pages and master book and make sure the appraiser understands you have a backup of everything by sending the pictures along with the collection.

Maybe there are some other options, but last week nobody had any.

Best of luck.

Thank you for the advice...sorry that happened to you guys.  I fully intend to try and get it appraised by more than one dealer if possible.  I don't even have it in my possession at the moment (will soon).  I think it is roughly three binders full of old stamps, my parents say some go back to the 1800s.  Could be nothing, could be a few gems in there...don't know yet :)  It's worth a shot.

Look up for local collectors where you live. If not then look at the next biggest town over. Do not send it off to anyone. And for fail-safe take pics and google the pics. Stamps collections are rare because no one keeps them anymore. If you can find someone where you are that you trust and just wants it all cheap then find someone else.
