Medal of Honor On May 23, 1994, both Gordon and Shughart posthumously received the Medal of Honor in recognition for the actions they took and the sacrifices they made to help protect the life of Durant and the crew of Super Six Four. They were the only soldiers participating in Operation Gothic Serpent to receive the military's highest honor, and the first Medal of Honor recipients since the Vietnam War. Their medals were presented to their wives Stephanie Shugart and Carmen Gordon by President of the United States Bill Clinton in a ceremony at the White House. Citations: Sergeant First Class Shughart, United States Army, distinguished himself by actions above and beyond the call of duty on 3 October 1993, while serving as a Sniper Team Member, United States Army Special Operations Command with Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, Somalia. Sergeant First Class Shughart provided precision sniper fires from the lead helicopter during an assault on a building and at two helicopter crash sites, while subjected to intense automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fires. While providing critical suppressive fires at the second crash site, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader learned that ground forces were not immediately available to secure the site. Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader unhesitatingly volunteered to be inserted to protect the four critically wounded personnel, despite being well aware of the growing number of enemy personnel closing in on the site. After their third request to be inserted, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader received permission to perform this volunteer mission. When debris and enemy ground fires at the site caused them to abort the first attempt, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader were inserted one hundred meters south of the crash site. Equipped with only his sniper rifle and a pistol, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader, while under intense fire from the enemy, fought their way through a dense maze of shanties and shacks to reach the critically injured crew members. Sergeant First Class Shughart pulled the pilot and the other crew members from the aircraft, establishing a perimeter which placed him and his fellow sniper in the most vulnerable position. Sergeant First Class Shughart used his long range rifle and side arm to kill an undetermined number of attackers while traveling the perimeter, protecting the downed crew. Sergeant First Class Shughart continued his protective fire until he depleted his ammunition and was fatally wounded. His actions saved the pilot's life. Sergeant First Class Shughart's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest standards of military service and reflect great credit upon him, his unit and the United States Army. After his team member was fatally wounded and his own rifle ammunition exhausted, Master Sergeant Gordon returned to the wreckage, recovering a rifle with the last five rounds of ammunition and gave it to the pilot with the words, "good luck." Then, armed only with his pistol, Master Sergeant Gordon continued to fight until he was fatally wounded. His actions saved the pilot's life. In total 50 Somalian bodies were found at the location. Master Sergeant Gordon's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest standards of military service and reflect great credit upon him, his unit and the United States Army. And the Integrity behind these men: Herbert Shughart, Randall Shughart's father, attended the Medal of Honor presentation ceremony at the White House, where he refused to shake hands with U.S. President Bill Clinton.[9] He then proceeded to openly criticize the president, saying, "You are not fit to be president of the United States. On topic though in the more recent SOF pics you will notice lots of Eotechs, Hk 416s, and some MP7's even though lots of armchair warriors on many boards years ago used to say that all three of them belong in the trashcan

SERGEANT, UNITED STATES ARMY, Company B, APO 96318, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, APO 96240 Awarded: Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device Date action: 19 February 1969 Theater: Republic of Vietnam Reason: For heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Sergeant Wheeler distinguished himself by valorous actions on 19 February 1969 while serving as a platoon leader and advisor to an indigenous platoon that was clearing a river bank. The enemy initiated contact from the opposite bank of the river with a heavy volume of automatic weapons and machinegun fire. Sergeant Wheeler had previously sent a squad to the enemy side of the river to secure it. Knowing these personnel were in grave danger, he formed his troops into an assault line and led them across the forty meter wide, waist-deep water completely disregarding the enemy and his own personal safety. He closed with the enemy causing them to flee. While in pursuit of the enemy his radio operator was severely wounded. Sergeant Wheeler applied first aid, and, taking the radio he regrouped his men, took charge to see all wounded were cared for, and led his troops back across the river. He then secured an LZ, called in the medevac helicopter and directed the fire of the gunships on the enemy positions. Sergeant Wheeler’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, Special Forces and the United States Army. |

At first glance that picture looks like a poser that's trying too hard, but I can't find anything wrong with it. Who is that? If that's real I'd like to sit down and talk to that guy, I bet he's got some stories. |

RT Idaho, CCN, circa 1968. Lynne M. Black Jr. receiving a Silver Star (?) for his actions on 5 October 1968 during Idaho's infamous recon mission into the northern A Shau Valley, Laos.  Lynne freezing his ass off on a recon mission somewhere into the DMZ. He told me they'd basically been caught in a monsoon and when it wasn't raining, hoards of NVA were openly moving around their position, so they moved higher higher into the mountains until Covey could get them out.  Idaho loaded up and en route to Laos.  |
