I am guessing it is bufotenin which is a hallucinogen that is excreted by the skin of certain toads. It is though to be a defense mechanism against being eaten.

That effect need not really be therapeutic in nature. More commonly what is referred to is the therapeutic index which is the difference between the ED50 and LD50. The ED50 (effective dose 50%) is the dose where 50% of the subjects show the drug's effect. The LD50 (lethal dose 50%) is the dose where 50% of the subject die. The difference between those is called the therapeutic index. The smaller the ratio the more dangerous drugs are because you have to get pretty close to a potentially lethal dose in order to produce the desired effect. If the ratio of between the two is large that means the drug is less dangerous. Oddly enough, another hallucinogen LSD has an incredibly high therapeutic index because it produces hallucinogenic effects at microgram doses but required really high doses to actually be lethal. |
