I shot my M-1 Garand yesterday and today I was reloading the empty clips with more .30-06 ammo.  I was using some de-linked military ball .30-06 I bought from the CMP.  But I found two cartridges in a box of the .30-06 ammo that I do not know what they are.

Here's a picture.

http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=80189

On the left is the box the ammo came in from the CMP.  The next two cartridges are .30-06 rounds.  The next two are the mystery ammo.  The two on the right are 7.62 X 51 NATO ball.

The two on the right are most certainly not 7.62x51 NATO. They look more like 8mm (7.92mm) x 57 Mauser. The two in the middle look like 7.62x51 NATO.

Here's a headstamp of the mystery ammo.

http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=80190

And here are the three calibers in the same order taken from above.

http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=80191

The bullets mic out at .308.  I have no idea how they got in a box of .30-06 ball.

Can anyone tell me what they are?

Thanks.

They look like 7.62x51.  Grid on the paper is quarter inch. 7.62X51 case length is 2.1835"

That was my thought, but the bullet isn't seated deep enough for that.  7.62x45 looks like a slightly stretched 7.62x39 round, almost has a "I'm wearing a turtleneck" look.

I agree too. There's about 1/2" difference in case length. If those grid squares are 1/4" then it appears there is 1/2" difference between left and center. Only 1/4" difference between left and right

I was mistaken.  I don't know how 2 8mm rounds got in that box, but that's what they are.

Agreed. The two in the middle are 7.62x51. Look at the case length in relation to the neck of the 30-06 round. 308 Win OAL is 2.015;30-06 neck starts at 2.109.

2.015 is the .308 case length, not the cartridge length.  That would be 2.800".
