On the left is the box the ammo came in from the CMP.  The next two cartridges are .30-06 rounds.  The next two are the mystery ammo.  The two on the right are 7.62 X 51 NATO ball.

The two on the right are most certainly not 7.62x51 NATO. They look more like 8mm (7.92mm) x 57 Mauser. The two in the middle look like 7.62x51 NATO.

Here's a headstamp of the mystery ammo.

http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=80190

And here are the three calibers in the same order taken from above.

http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=80191

The bullets mic out at .308.  I have no idea how they got in a box of .30-06 ball.

Can anyone tell me what they are?

Thanks.

That was my first thought. But I think OP knows his stuff

They look like 7.62x51.  Grid on the paper is quarter inch. 7.62X51 case length is 2.1835"

That was my thought, but the bullet isn't seated deep enough for that.  7.62x45 looks like a slightly stretched 7.62x39 round, almost has a "I'm wearing a turtleneck" look.

Far right looks 8mm, Middle looks like 7.62x51

Nope, they are 7.62 X 51 NATO.  Took them right out of a box.

o

Agreed.  Look at the OAL compared to the 30.06.

Let's see all the headstamps.

The cartridges in the middle sure look like .308/7.62x51 to me.

Is it a spotter round of some sort?

7.65 Argentine, perhaps.

30-06, .308, 30-06 converted to 8mm
Link Posted: 9/1/2015 5:08:50 PM EDT
Looks like 30-06 (7.62x63), .308 (7.62 x 51) and 8mm Mauser from here.

7.65x53 would only be 2mm longer (case length) than 7.62x51.

They must've been in the wrong box too. The two, in the first photo, on the far right....are NOT 7.62 NATO.

I agree too. There's about 1/2" difference in case length. If those grid squares are 1/4" then it appears there is 1/2" difference between left and center. Only 1/4" difference between left and right

7.5x54 French?

No idea if LC ever produced that round but it seems unlikely.

I am curious to see a definitive answer.

Agreed. The two in the middle are 7.62x51. Look at the case length in relation to the neck of the 30-06 round. 308 Win OAL is 2.015;30-06 neck starts at 2.109.

2.015 is the .308 case length, not the cartridge length.  That would be 2.800".

Mic the case length and see.

What is the O.A.L.?
Experimental Prototype round, can't recall the designation, an in between the 5.56-7.62.
Less weight, still more power.

How does it look next to a 7.62 x 39? It looks like a 7.62x40or45

So, from left to right, 7.62x63, 7.62x51 and 7.92x57... AKA .30-06, 7.62 NATO and 8mm Mauser. Mystery solved.
