Hey all. Got a new to me toolbox last night (Hand me down from the FIL).

My previous small toolbox was in the back corner of the garage. Realized while I was working on the car in the driveway that the new toolbox needed to go right by the big door so I can easily get to it weather I was inside the garage or in the driveway.

Anyways, looking for some ideas for organization. Especially for socket organization and an external screwdriver holder. I really hate the ones that have an insert for the socket, and would rather have something magnetic, and identify sizes and SAE/Metric per sheet. The prior toolbox was stuffed so bad things were just piled in. Trying to take my time and make this box have a spot for everything. (And I'll still have empty drawers that will need filling.) Not interested in SnapOn or other expensive accessories - I don't use it hard enough to be worth more than Craftsman. I am considering shadowing all the tools down the line once I fill in a few more holes.

For the screwdriver holder, I'd like to get something that attaches magnetically externally. I need to be able to hold up to 20 screwdrivers between my Phillips, flat, and torx. (Two rows of 10 would be fine.) I'd like it to be red to match the toolbox, but absolutely not required.

I've done some googling and have some ideas, but not wanting to taint what is coming here.

I like the rails that hole the sockets. That way if I'm not sure what size I need or need multiple sockets I can take a whole rail of them.

Sell it to me, I'll pick it up.

How do you keep them from falling over in the box?

And....I have a habit of snapping the inserts off removing the sockets.

Craftsman and Northern tool both have socket trays where the sockets slide on posts and the socket size is written on the top of the post.

Northern tool also has nice screwdriver trays.

Hansen socket trays are my favorite. The 1/2 inch ones don't fit into some drawers though. These trays are faster to find the right socket and you don't have to snap them in, they just slip onto the post. I don't know how to post pics or a link.

For more ideas you might venture over to the forums at garagejournal.com.  Be forewarned to hold on to your wallet though.

These things are awesome! They seem pricey, but are worth it. I have a roll around tool tray that I can take these out of my big drawer and stage them on the rolling tray.

The rails are pretty good.  I decided to try the Ernst system.  They're plastic but pretty damn strong, haven't broken one yet.  They have a 'twist to lock' action which generally prevents sockets from falling off or getting lose.  I like that each rail can be customized to any number of sockets.  So far so good, I've had them for about a year.  Not sure how they will hold up long term.  Some type of rail system is def the way to go though -- much better when you're not sure which socket you will need.

I have a set of trays I really don't like them.  I think strips are better, for me at least.

So far, those trays were at the top of my list.

How tall is the tallest one so I can make sure they will fit in my drawers, height-wise?

OP I promise you that the Picquic screwdrivers (particularly the Dash 7 with 2" bits) are the best screwdrivers you'll ever buy.  And they're made in Canada.  But I'm not saying they're the best because they're made in Canada, but because they are literally the best.

Buy the 3 pack and then get yourself one of those impact bit sets from Dewalt or Irwin or whatever.  You'll be set for life.

I've been using one of these for the last 7 years or so.

I really like them and haven't had any problems with them breaking.

I keep looking at those too. I'd have to pick up one in blue and one in red, so I can organize it for SAE and Metric.

These Westling socket holders are nice and of course the Hansens are pretty classic.

I just bought a set of the Ernst rails for my work bag, so I am hoping they work out well.

The Ernst twist-lock system has changed my life. Really, it has. It is the greatest thing to ever happen to socket organization.

I use the Hansens, have a full set in each drive size.

They work great other then some of the smaller size sockets not fitting all the way down on the posts (especially the 1/4 drive stuff).
Could just be my sockets (Craftsman).

I just use the trays/strips they sell at Lowes.  Works fine for me.

I use trays like this makes it easy to grab and take to my project so I am not bouncing back and forth for the correct size.  Impact sockets go on to this.

I use these for my wrenches.  I had to cut the handle off to make it fit my smaller top tool box.  1 inch and up wrenches are hanging above the work bench on peg board.

The 1/4" trays are 2 7/16" tall, 3/8" trays are 2 15/16" tall, and 1/2" trays are 3 11/16" tall

Thank you. I'll measure the drawers when I get home. I really like that the sizes are right on there rather then grab each one to read the socket.
