Exactly what the hell did she do to earn such notoriety.

In terms of celebrity status she is practically a nobody and nothing when compared to Sophia Loren.

Eight women carried the Olympic flag: Italian actress Sophia Loren, Chilean writer Isabel Allende, American actress Susan Sarandon, Nobel Peace-prize winner Wangari Maathai of Kenya, and three Olympic medal winners. They were Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco, Manuela Di Centa of Italy, and Maria Mutola of Mozambique. The eighth was Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam.

I can see an Italian celebrity like Loren as Italy is the host country. But how the hell did Sarandon get a spot. She is a second rate nobody and an embarrassment to her country.

What exactly does an "activist" do, anyway?

Hey, stop doing that non-human rights thing!

OK, sorry lady.

Well, I didn't want to get your Mum involved, young man.

OK, she's gone, get the battery cables out!

Isn't Isabel Allende the daughter of that communist leader of Chile in the 1970s that the CIA overthrew?

Don't get me wrong...I agree. I was simply pointing out that at least those three deserved to be there.

And if Sophia Loren is as "big deal" in Italy as I imagine she probably is, then she probably earns her spot. So that leaves 4 questionables. Oh well, I guess we're lucky Oprah didn't get chosen.

+1 - That any non-athlete is carrying/doing ANYTHING at the Olympics other than spectating is PROOF that it is not an athletic competition.

More proof is all the "sports" where aestetic judging is used.  Even ski jumping - What part of jumping the farthest needs judges to score it?  You just have to jump the longest distance and not fall down at the end.  Points for how you look doing it is ridiculous.  Figure skating, almost any X "sport", ...  If they judge aestetics, we might as well have beauty contests.  Drinking contests would be more valid than half these events.

Maoists for "Peace"

Not In Our Name (NION) project – a self-described "peace" movement that has produced, most notably, two documents publicly denouncing our country’s post-9/11 policies, both foreign and domestic.

These documents have received a groundswell of support from many prominent artists, academicians, and activists. Among the tens of thousands to publicly endorse NION’s objectives are Ed Asner, Oliver Stone, Ossie Davis, Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon, Alice Walker, Ramsey Clark, Tom Hayden, Al Sharpton, Martin Luther King III, Gloria Steinem, Medea Benjamin, Leslie Cagan, and Noam Chomsky.

The NION project was initiated by a man named C. Clark Kissinger, a longtime Maoist activist. Currently a member of the Revolutionary Communist Party and a contributing writer for the socialist publication Revolutionary Worker, Kissinger began his public activism in the early 1960s when he was the national secretary of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), founded by Tom Hayden. The leading radical organization of its day, SDS later split into several groups, among which was the militant, revolutionary Weathermen.
