I like Macs but your use case seems like something a Best Buy laptop with Ubuntu would handle just fine.
That's how I set my Dad up and he's perfectly happy. |

Hell if you want a mac, find a used Powerbook on Craigslist. I see 2 year old PB's for 500 every now and then.

Look on Craigslist for a used Netbook?
You really don't need much horsepower to surf the internets.

I bought a factory refurbished HP nc6400 on Overstock (or amazon? tigerdirect? I forget) for about $350 w/ XP Pro. Basically "new", more than enough power for interwebz. Great little machine.

I ended up getting a Toshiba Satellite L675. Total came to about $550. I haven't purchased a new computer in a number of years wow these things have come a long way. To think I purchased a 2,000 thinkpad almost eight years ago and this is fifty times better.
