I’m looking for a slim sling bag for air travel. Something small enough to be used as a “personal item,” NOT carry-on sized. Needs to be big neigh til hold an iPad, phone, chargers, sunglasses, snacks, and must have a water bottle pocket and padded shoulder strap. Nothing camo or covered in PALS webbing. Suggestions? |

The Copilot "swallows" a 20 ounce bottle in it's center pocket. it doesn't protrude from the bag, or hang on the outside. There's a small hole at the bottom, to drain condensation, etc. You won't like the price, $165ish, but you'll love the quality and funcitonality. I ended up with 3 Copilots and 2 Pilots. PacSafe ECO 12L sling - if security is important to you. I did a good bit of travelling last year. US, MX, PI. I had this thing jam packed and used it brutally for almost 3 months. It's been awesome, 2 fucking water bottle holders! Barely any signs of wear. Down sides: It's not cheap. The padding on the main strap could've been an inch longer (I'm tall). Also, a lot of people dont want a chest strap: it's detachable and I like to use them when I'm riding a bike or a scooter. Total gray man shit - people see you carrying this and they know you're not the one to fuck with - seriously, the condo salesmen at the airports, the baggage handlers, street crabs - they don't give you a second glance.. Here it is in Cebu. Its a little dusty and you can really see the steel mesh in this pic.  Here you can see the lock system. Is it Ft. Knox? No. But a good number of the rooms I stayed did not have any (or functioning) safes. I could lock the strap around an under sink pipe or beneath the bed to the frame and make things inconvenient for anyone that was trying to do a quick run through.

I bought one new and liked it so much, I grab all the others on eBay. All eBay bags have been in as new condition. I think $135 was the least expensive. They don't lose their value much and certain legacy colors bring bigger money. Material is strong, straps, stiches, clips are all quality. You can keep searching for an alternative, but I'm a but of a bag geek and searched long and hard, then just splurged. The search challenges: - removable shoulder strap - watter bottle - this was the toughest part. I didn't want the bottle falling out, but didn't want it coming in contact with other items. I prefer a room temperature bottle, but they're hard to find in the airport, so this bottle from Amaon solved that. - larger enough to stuff a lite pullover shirt - watching various emergency evacs from planes, I like that this bag is a personal item and not a pack. Here is the 16.9oz bottle I put in my Copilot bag and I use 20oz on my Pilot

I've been using this to fly (mines is multi cam or something like that) Haven't had any trouble with it at the airports yet.

Sling bags, cross body bags, fanny packs, etc. They used to not care, until TikTok told everyone that food bags and drinks from the concourse, extra coats, a cross body bag under your sweatshirt, etc, as you walked down the jetbridge didn't count so people started hiding shit and making a mess of the boarding process as they doffed everything. Now the heavy jacket, the cross body bag, etc, all count but they're usually lenient on the food bag as long as you're not bringing down a catering-sized bag and hiding a bunch of shit in it. You might get away with a discrete fanny pack the size of your wallet, keys, and phone a few times, until somebody starts drama about their cross body bag the size of a laptop, then they're going to give every non-compliant bag the boot. Or you get an gate attendant or FA who is being a stickler, and the captain introduces himself to you personally. Kharn |

This is a travel bag, but I use it for my daily bag. It’s cheap (under $40). Doesn’t hold a water bottle and not quite as big as the OP wants, but it gives you can idea of what else is out there. It can hold my iPhone 15 Pro with small backup battery, Kindle Paperwhite, keys, glasses, and a few other small items, such as granola bars. I’m with the OP on wanting to get out of a plane emergency with my purse. Women’s clothing doesn’t generally have pockets. A small purse isn’t a backpack or roller bag. Wander Plus travel bag |

I have a SwissGear laptop backpack. Tons of compartments; it fits my MacBook Pro, extra screen, all chargers/cables, has a water pouch on each side, sunglasses compartment, etc. It's about 30L. I was upgrading my luggage for more overseas trips, but after evaluating it I decided to stay with it vs buying something new. I got it at Sams Club. No problem with going on a casual trip with this backpack alone for a week or so. Fits under the seat with no issues. I also take one of these along, it's $3 from AliExpress. I leave my travel backpack in the accommodation and use this to go to take things to the beach, go to the store, etc. Very lightweight and packs away into nothing. I've also used it separately as the "personal item" when I wanted to take stuff into the cabin (snacks etc) beyond my backpack.

Everyone would assume that is a CPAP case, it's so ugly and generic and about the right size.  CPAPs and other medical equipment are exempt from the one bag and one person item limit, but they can demand you open the bag and show them it is only medical equipment. Kharn Yep... and some of these airlines are giving "bounty" pay for gate agents that catch anyone with something that they will be forced to check for an additional fee. So it's hard to push the limits now. I ended up getting an ExOfficio FlyQ vest with a multitude of inner hidden pockets as a "just in case" thing to keep in my backpack for if they decide to weigh my backpack or I need to take more than what will fit. Yeah wearing a vest looks a little goofy, but the last place I'm going to worry about being the pinnacle of fashion is in an airport where it's socially acceptable to drink a Long Island iced tea at 8:30am. |

I take an empty Camelback 32oz stainless bottle in the bottle pocket (which is adjustable) and fill up in the terminal. Never had a problem. I have a couple different sized laptop bags l use. One about average size and one a bit bigger. I stuff a change of socks and underwear, a small trash bag (for the dirty laundry of l need to change  ) Kindle, water bottle, hell I've stuff my Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars in there too. I find them the perfect piece for carry-on/ personal bag.

The Tom Bihn and Pacsafe are tier one options. Probably too small for your iPad, but the Victos Upscale 2 (now 3) may be too small:   Just saw they now have an XL model that might work: Upscale XL I do have an Eddy Bauer sling bag that has an external water bottle pocket, but many are angled too much for an iPad. I just saw Maxpedition discontinued their Entity Tech Sling bag (smallest, 7L size) is absolutely perfect for carrying my Surface Pro, but if interested, you might find one on Ebay (happy I have two!): https://www.amazon.com/Maxpedition-Entity-Tech-Sling-Small/dp/B07T9M84DP As to avoiding the secondary carry-on bag, I normally travel with a roller, backpack and small sling bag. The backpacks with a beaver tail or with enough room to put it inside will get you past the gate check-in. The smaller Viktos bag has been up under my arm and under my backpack and I never caught any flak. It's just nice have the convenience of that small sling bag for a few handy items that make it a PITA to carry in your pockets and as much as I love cargo pockets you look like a stupid private with a bulging BDU pocket holding a fucking canteen on one side and poncho in the other pocket ROCK6 |

You could stuff it into a backpack if you want, but I'm done with backpacks. I've traveled as much as 30 times in a year and am down to what I like. Maybe because I used a backpack for work travel and I'm done with both! We did this a few weeks back; if you want to take stuff with you in an emergency, wear cargo pants with closable pockets. Nobody wants you fucking around with a bag when the planes on fire and everyone is going down a slide It's not under a seat, it's at my feet. Either I sling it on, or folks next to me trip on it on the way. My plan is sound The FAs check for items that are not "fully underneath the seat in front of you" prior to taxi. Kharn |
