I posted this in the M1 forum, but didn't get much of a response. I'm wondering about this (supposedly Yugoslavian) .30-06 ammo that I got as a Christmas gift. Here is the info I have. I'm thinking maybe it's some sort of M2 ball spec ammo based on the last part of the top of the box - it says M2. If you guys could help me out it'd be great. The headstamp says NK 1957 (with a backwards N). I mainly want to know if it's corrosive or not but any other info would be great. |

Weird indeed.
I cant find any 30-06 ammo from Russian, but that dman sure looks like Ruskie writing.  I know ammoman has some from Bosnia.......weird indeed. Do you know the source of that ammo S_W? |

That is not any M-2 ball type ammo I have ever seen, and I have just about everthing that has been on the market for the last few years.

Can't help you on the ammo ID, but I treat all foreign ammo as corrosive regardless of what the box might say.

here's a blurb fromt he CMP about how they're buying Yugo 30.'06.
"Ammunition The CMP has started selling what seems to be Federal American Eagle .30-06 ammo. This is what they used for the JCG match at Camp Perry this year. Cost for clubs is 35 cents per round, cost for individuals is 45 cents per round. We have been paying about 25 cents per round for surplus M2 Ball. Unfortunately, the CMP is currently out of all types of .30-06. It looks like we will buy a large order of Yugoslavian .30-06 for use in matches next year (21 cents a round). If you get this via e-mail, please reply to me if you intend to purchase .30-06 ammunition from the club at our matches next year. More and more folks have taken up reloading, so we may not need as much ammo as last year. Please let me know. .30 Carbine ammunition is not a problem at this time. |

 YMMV, but I dont think I would shoot it until someone else has said they have used it before.......I know Garands do not like Regular Commercial ammo. Did you call CMP and see what they may know? |

almost guaranteed to be corrosive. just clean well after.
that igman ammo is garbage. i bought a few boxes of their 308 a couple of years ago from a local gun shop. 1/2 of it was so out of spec it wouldn't chamber in my cetme. |

I decided not to call them after I found the link to the site about the ammo. Since no one else really seems to have any experience with it, I'll probably still call them sometime this week. I figure though, if the CMP intends on selling it, it probably isn't corrosive. |

Find a piece of old steel and rough it up in two different areas with some sandpaper. Then pull the bullet with pliers, and dump the powder from a round. Put on some protective eye-wear and leather gloves. Put the empty shell in some vise-grips. Take a punch and hammer, and detonate the primer while pointing the empty shell at the Area 1 of the metal you roughed up. Use Area 2 as a comparision (don't let primer spray get on this area). Let the metal sit for a week in your garage and see if it developes rust. If no rust appears, the round is likely non-corrosive. If rust appears on area 1 and not on area 2, then the round is corrosive.
Note: Be careful because the primer may eject from the round when you detonate it. When I do this I wear a full-face motorcycle helmet, jacket and leather gloves. |

It's good stuff!
I bought a few cans of it maybe 7 or 8 years ago.I didn't notice any corrosiveness to it.Shot just as accurate and as clean as M2 ball.It did smoke quite a bit,though (compared to other stuff). I still have a can or 2 left somewhere.Mine came packed in .50 cal cans.I haven't seen any in awhile-where'd they get it from?It was cheap when I bought it. |

It was kind of pricey, because it came from a local gun store. I'll call the CMP right now and ask them. LHD your girlfriend is awesome, is there any chance of her translating what my Mauser says on it if I emailed a picture to you? Thanks a lot. TacticalStrat that's a pretty good idea. An even better idea on the motorcycle gear for protection. |

Damn. I forgot, the CMP is closed between Christmas and New Years.
So much for that. I like that corrosiveness test though. I think some day I'll try it with an 8mm round and see just how corrosive corrosive ammo is (intentional repeat, read it out loud ).Edit: Thanks for the info, carguym14. |
