Abduction attempted; man charged Friday, December 16, 2005 By ALICIA GUIDE [email protected]
CHICOPEE, MA - A Holyoke man was charged last night with grabbing a baby out of her mother's arms and then trying twice to abduct another parent's 4-year-old boy outside the Wal-Mart on Memorial Drive, police said.
The children were unharmed, police said.
Police arrested Mark C. Klimek, 32, of 36 Taylor St. and charged him with two counts of kidnapping a child and two counts of assault and battery for grabbing the children from their mothers, said Capt. Steven G. Muise of the Chicopee Police Department.
People were exiting the Wal-Mart about 8:43 p.m. when a man approached a woman who was holding her 10-month-old daughter and grabbed the baby from her arms, Muise said.
A struggle ensued and the mother retrieved her child. The man then turned around and approached another woman who was walking with her two children, one of whom was a 4-year-old boy, Muise said.
The mother of the baby yelled to the mother of two to grab her children, but the man pulled the 4-year-old boy away from his mother, Muise said.
The mother struggled with the man.
A Salvation Army worker jumped in to help, and together the mother and the worker managed to get the boy away from the man, Muise said.
When the mother and the Salvation Army worker ran to the mother's car to put her two children inside her vehicle, the man tried to grab the boy a second time, but a crowd of people held onto the man until the police arrived and arrested him, Muise said.
