| What's the scoop on SP2? Have all the issues been worked out with it? |
I tried installing it again a few days ago, still unable to right click anything, anywhere without crashing the explorer shell. Read somewhere that installing under safe mode would fix that, still a no go. I know the cause of the problem is all the programs that add a function to the right click menu, but I don't want to be buggered to uninstall all of them or to just wipe the machine and install SP2 first thing. Not quite my cup of tea. SP1 is fine for now. |
You don't have Dr. Divx installed do you? That will happen with XP SP2 installed with the Dr. Divx 1.0.5 version installed. The problem was corrected with the 1.0.6 upgrade at Divx.com. support.divx.com/cgi-bin/divx.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=731 |

I've not had any problems on the two PCs I've installed with XP SP2, but then again, I didn't do it the way most people do. If you want to do it, and do it trouble free.....back up your shit, then reformat and reinstall XP and then immediately after do SP2. OR you could do it exactly as I did....make an XP SP2 slipstream CD (you actually make a new CD, which takes the original Windows XP install CD and updates it to SP2, so you actually install the updated XP SP2), install the basic apps, then Ghost the thing....... |
damn 15 seconds...exactly as I have done it myself...minus the ghosting, that got old after awhile. EDIT - nice guide on slipstreaming SP2 here www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1626 funny how people blame MS for their own lack of ability to understand software conflicts.... |
I did have that installed, but read somewhere that once removed, the problem goes away. I removed it, problem still exists. Thus, FUCK SP2. I don't use the XP side for much more than games and the occasional post on ARFCOM anyhow, so I'm not that depressed over it. |

another good guide here www.maximumpc.com/reprints/reprint_2005-01-05.html also I find it nice to use the WINNT.SIF file to automate most of the setup routine. You can just copy and paste the following into notepad and rename appropiately, then drop into the /i386 directory before burning the installation image. Delete User Data fields if you don't choose to use them, otherwise keep the quotes. I just wrote up a pretty thorough guide to installing, securing, and tweaking XP and am putting the finishing touches on it....maybe I'll post it for you all to peruse? www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1747010,00.asp decent guide to making a slip stream SP2 cd |

Another good slipstreaming guide can be found at www.tacktech.com ; they also have a database of known CD Labels. I definitely recommend going the slipstream route; it is cleaner, faster and offers far fewer opportunities for disaster. Even on my terribly slow Laptop, WinXP SP2 runs very well. I cheat: I have a RIS server in conjunction with an Administrative Install Point; whenever a new installation is needed, I don't even need to hit Windows Update when I'm done. That is, unless Microsoft has me running some "Available through Support Only" hotfix (Like now....). |
| I have never had any problems with it on my XP machine. The problems I have seen with it on others peoples computers seemed to be caused by spyware or viruses, or some other programs that were on the computer causing the problem not SP2 itself. Thats not to say SP2 is perfect but I would say as long as your computer is running ok its safe to put it on. I would be hessitent however to install it in hopes that its going to be a magic fix any problems that you are currently having with it. Also there are many security patches that are on SP2 that I wouldn't want left open by not having it installed. So at this point I dont see any reason not to install it for the most part. |
