SENATOR HILL'S POLITICAL ‘BOOT CAMP'
By DEBORAH ORIN

http://www.nypost.com/commentary/66782.htm

TO a lot of observers, Sen. Hillary Clinton's surprise decision to enlist in the Senate Armed Services Committee is proof-positive she lusts to be commander-in-chief.
And some are pretty livid about it.

"Oh, no," groaned Elaine Donnelly of the conservative Center for Military Readiness. "That's the worst thing I've heard in a long time. She's perfectly capable of using this to position herself as someone who is pro-military in a dishonest way."

But Donnelly credits Clinton with smarts for getting the coveted slot: "The first woman president will certainly be someone who's strong and pro-defense in the mode of Margaret Thatcher and Golda Meir."

She also wondered aloud if Clinton will still push some controversial military policies from her husband's administration - like letting gays serve openly in the military and putting women in combat. What about those hot-button issues? Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines said Clinton "looks forward . . . to addressing these important issues at the appropriate time."

Clinton has ruled out a presidential bid in 2004 - when many analysts suspect President Bush will whip any Democrat big-time, maybe even in New York - but said she has "no plans" to run for president in 2008.

But New York is hardly a major center for military bases. That's why no other New York senator has tried to get on the Armed Services Committee. The state's lawmakers have tended to focus on the intellectual aspects of foreign policy rather than military policy.

Says presidential scholar Stephen Hess: "For someone who would like to have a more robust image in terms of national security - and obviously isn't going to join the National Guard - what better way? It's excellent in terms of political image."

Besides, for a policy wonk like Clinton, the military offers a whole new avenue of intriguing study. If the past is any guide, she'll quickly be boning up on throw-weights and J-DAMS and the best way to operate Predator drones. What better way than to be on a committee where visiting military bases and hanging out with the troops is a natural part of the job?

Yeah, I'd like to see Sen. Hillary Clinton visiting military bases and hanging out with the troops!

I mean I really, really would like to see it!

The question would be whether the network cameras would be permitted to 'zoom-out' to show you the many, many bodyguards that would be tending her at such times!

I know, you can count on the military to do what's right.

Actually, I am hoping the military will do what's right.

If only she were caught in a lesbian midget love triangle, maybe she'd disappear for good.  Oh well, maybe when she gets truly dangerous, people will wake up.
