(Thread about "whats your excuse" got me wheels churning . . .)

Did you sign up for Selective Service?  If so, what branch?  If not why didn't you (explain).
Poll Coming

BTW, I did for the Marine Corps.  Did it for kicks (and because your supposed to) as I had already enlisted at age 17.

Yep, when I turned 18 twenty-four years ago.

Didn't EVERYBODY have to sign up within 90 days of their 18th birthday?

I know I was asked to prove I did a time or two related to college/postgraduate admission, IIRC.

And it was just "selective service," I didn't have an option to SELECT a service.

uh exactly.

I don't remember seeing an option on it for which branch I preferred.

When they do a draft, the only selecting going on will be the government selecting which branch to put me in.

You don't have to if you don't send in the postcard.

I picked US Army but for the life of me cannot remember if I was given a choice on the thing and that was only 6 years ago.  I'll have to go look at the bottom of my safe.

I was active duty when it was implimented.

I tried to get a half day off to go register out of my NCO to go register but he saw through my scam.

Yep - I know that in when I signed up in 1979 you didn't select what service. That's kinda up to them if there's a draft.

Dang, that was 30 years ago. Walked in with a broken leg and signed right up. Missed Viet Nam by about 10 months.

I signed up for Selective Service back when I turned 18.  I'm 22 now and don't know for what branch it was.

I filled out it electronically 1 week after my 18th birthday. I had no option of branch, so I put no option of branch.

Had I the option, I probably would've put down USAF or Army.

Same here, back when I signed up (seems like ages ago), you just went to the post office and filled, I did it on my 18th b-day.

Now here in FL, you register, and when you renew your license, they automatically change your current info to SS. But of course now, I am over the age required to keep info current.

I did in '95, but there was no branch choice.

Of course I was disqualified for life from any possibility of military service later that year.  Epilepsy.

signed up on my 18th birthday a long long time ago. It was so long ago, there was only one branch of service. (ba-doom-boom)  My draft card was on parchment. (ba-doom-boom)  My draft classification was 1-BC. (ba-doom-boom) I wanted the  Navy, but I failed rowing. (ba-doom-boom)

I did and did not have a branch choice.  If it came to the point where we needed a draft again, I would already be in the servcie anyway.

[#21]
Yup, had too when you turned 18 in 1967. Went to the Post Office, and wound up being 4F. So I have never served but did as I was supposed to do back then and sign up.

I did, but I don't recall there being any choices when I did it. Then again I joined the Army not long afterwards so I haven't really worried about it since then.

I registered on my 18th birthday in 2003. I did it online in the middle of my journalism class just to piss off the teacher. No branch selection available though.

Considering that on the day I turned 18, I was a in a foxhole fighting mock enemies during AF Security Forces training - nope, I never signed up.

Did it when I was 18 (2001), and didn't get an option for service.

Can we get an updated entry in the poll for "Yes, but I didn't get to pick a service"?

Yes, when I was 18, no service selection available.

Didn't select anything in the poll because there is no selection suitable.

YES.  I didn't sign up for a particular branch.  You HAVE to when you turn 18.  You WILL NOT get financial aid, as I understand it, if you do not sign up.

When I was 18 there was a Draft in place.

I had to register.

I had no option of where I could have gone to.

I was Classified 1-H.

Yep.

Despite being rejected from every service due to medical issues, they won't take me off the rolls. I asked.

There was no registration requirement when I turned 18.  That was 1976.

Vietnam era registration ended in 1974.  I missed that by two years.  I wasn't required to register in 1980 when it began again.

Not only that, I'm physically unqualified for active duty service because of my lazy eye and flat feet.

Nope I didn't sign up for the Selective Service. I got a Nasty Gram from them while I was in Marine Corps Boot Camp. One of my DI's thought it was hilarious and sent them a letter saying that I couldn't get to the post office to register as I was previously engaged at MCRD Parris Island SC.

No.

Also knew that if the country really needed me I would enlist.
