Sightron 3x12-50 at $160 (?). Is that a good all around scope for a DSA FAL.  I asked in the optics forum and only got one reply.

*this one's gonna be outta here way before I get some decent advice.

you might need some awfully tall rings to clear the 50mm objective on that beast.

Tall rings?

yes as in rings that sit high enough to clear that large objective lens, it would probably work fine but you may need a cheek pad to comfortably shoot

Is it a good quality scope?

not a clue to be honest.

Having owned 50mm & 40mm Objective scopes.... I would not spring for another 50 unless there were no 40's on the market with the specifics I was looking for.  Or if it was a dedicated bench rifle and I knew I could raise the cheek rest to fit.

So, it was too good to be true.  OK, would you put it on a Wilson Combat Urban Tactical .556?

way more glass than needed for a 5.56 weapon.

How would it work on an ArmaLite .50BMG?

No.

Spend at least enough to get a 2x7 Leupold VX-I; it won't be much more, but the quality difference will be noticable, and the Leupold will still be working 10 years from now, whether it's still on your FAL or if it's been moved to its 5th host rifle.  The Sightron (some no-name brand) will be in a landfill after you've taken it out a few times.

The scope mount on a FAL (I'm assuming you're going with DSA's excellent mount) is already high, so you want an optic that will mount as low as possible.  This definitely procludes large objective scopes.  Also, you need to know that cheap scopes often use larger objective lenses to gather more light, to try to make up for the poor quality of their glass and coatings.  None of that will make up for the fuzzy picture or the seals that will quickly give out and ruin the scope, assuming the internals don't all come loose.

Have you heard the statement "you get what you pay for"?  No where is that more true that with optics.  Don't buy junk.  Stick with one of the following brands:

- Trijicon
- Leupold
- AimPoint
- EOTech
