Which would you prefer in combat in the 1880's?

I think the ease of loading and unloading the S&W makes it a better weapon than the Colt.

I know Jesse James could buy anything and he carried a S&W.

General Hatcher considers the Colt M1873 Army aka "Peacemaker" revolver to be the worst pistol ever adopted by the Army.  Troublesome and prone to breaking fragile parts.  Loading is the least of it's troubles.

I'd go with the S&W.

I believe that if S&W had the wisdom to
chamber their revolver in .45LC, it would have
had MUCH wider use.  The topbreak design
is much faster to reload on horseback than
the Colt.  John

the reason the army at the time kept the colt was becouse some people were issued schofields and some had SAA of course they had huge stockpiles of 45 scofield still on hand and it worked in the colt just fine so to fix the supply problems they were having they said nix to the schofield.  i used to be do cowboy action shooting and i can tell you from expericace those SAA break down alot.

Yep, another decision made by the bean counters, not the users!

Sorry, a bit off topic.  But what is the proper pronunciation of "Schofield"?  Is it like "show-field" or "sko-field"?

BTW - I'd go with the Schofield.

"Sko-field" Barracks is the name of the fort in Hawaii named after the same guy.
