That's the title of the autobiogrqaphy of Brian "Head" Welch, former lead guitarist of the band Korn. Lacking a book forum, I figured GD would be the appropriate place to mention it. I'm about 3/4 through it. It's a pretty gritty read about his life full of addictions and excess, then the dramatic turnaround that led him to quite the band. The subtitle is "How I found God, quit Korn, kicked drugs, and lived to tell my story." In Korn, Welch was living a life others just dream of. The Rock Star. However, I think so many people dream about that lifestyle because they don't know what it is like behind the scenes. The drugs, dysfunctional relationships, and general excess make for a life more miserable than most people realize. Welch's story pulls back the curtain, showing the dark side. He also tells about what it took to climb out of that pit and make his life count for something meaningful. Heck, just reading about when he finally dropped meth left an impression. That drug is so addictive it is virtually impossible to quit it. There are probably other books that are more entertaining to read, but I tend to prefer a real-life story. Especially when it takes a turn off the road to disaster and a life is salvaged. It's a story of how Jesus is able to reach down into a person's life, set things right, and in the end the level of good in the world is raised. |
