What is the proper level of humidity that should be kept inside a gun safe? |
|
Uhhh...don't know. You might consider using a Goldenrod device to keep moisture from condensing on whatever is in your safe. Also keep the items in your safe lightly coated with a decent gun oil. I tried to use a desicant (silica gel) in my safe, but it seemed to need recharging in the oven too frequently, so I went with the Goldenrod. My guess is that the fire lining of my safe (gypsum I think) needs to use moisture to be effective, so the silica gel was just absorbing the moisture from the gypsum. I am in a high humidity area, but nothing like being along the Gulf Coast or something. I've had no problems with rust so far. dvo |

All depends on the temperature of the guns. A goldenrod only works when there is adequate ventilation and it does so by slight heating. The first thing to remember is NO AMMO IN THE SAFE. Why? Because it can outgas. Then ALL guns need a wipedown before placing in the safe. There are many cloths for this or any clean towel with a light coating of good oil will work. Then the safe needs to be in a temperature and humidity controlled room. A goldenrod will keep the temperture slightly higher, preventing condensation. If there are no optics on the firearms, you can use vapor phase corrosion inhibitor paper/crystals. But since most firearms have optics, the use of VPCI is not recommended. |
