makes you wonder if less lethal rounds could've been used ... I mean, the guy was out in the open, barely clothed, so it would've been extremely effective.

No time. They saw him, he turned with a weapon. Fuck him, he basically commited suicide. Even if they had tome to prepare, non lethal is risky to use. Imagine if they hit him with a bean bag and he got a shot off? He may be alive, but you may well have a dead officer.

the thing is he did get the shot off.
a little late but his gun fired.
