If you were confronted to surrender your weapon in a SHTF situation by police or national guard what would you do?
12/5/2006 4:46:10 AM EDT
[#1]
Suicide by cop or national guard then

[#2]
Being a husband, and father of 5 kids... I'm more usefull to them alive than dead.

I think I would make a pretty good effort to avoid the confrontation in the first place.

Surrender it to them; bullets first.

I would smile and cheerfully give up the gun in question.

Then I would simply go to one of my stashes and get out another one!
12/5/2006 4:53:49 AM EDT
[#5]
Resist.

They should be more worried about civilians taking theirs. In certain SHTF situations it might actually make sense to get your weapons from the police and/or NG. We did pay for them after all with our tax dollars. What if we want them back.

Yep. I would get a good look at the person taking the gun. I want to remember him for when payback day comes around. He will be at the top of the list.

Interesting because last week while having breakfast with a friend who is a road cop at another department the topic of what would you do if you were given orders to confiscate firearms from citizens arose. I don't remember how the topic came up but i posed the question to him. I was kind of surprised and disappointed by his answer. His intital one was " Like during a hurricane? I don't think anyone would. We have too many good ole boys and that wouldn't sit right with." I noticed he never answered for himself instead using his fellow officers as an excuse. so i posed the question as the federal government amending the constitution. " Well if they changed the laws. Yes i would"  I've known this guy who a few years. Real smart young officer. Good guy. But when he said he would "follow orders" i shuttered a bit and simpley said " well when and if the times comes i hope you choose the right side." Moved off the topic and finished our breakfast.

What bothers me more than realizing my friend would say something like that is there will be thousands of people his age, in his position that will " follow orders" and " do their job". Guys who cannot see the difference between god given rights and their job. Our conversation has sat heavily on my mind since.

I'd log on to arfcom and make a panicked post about "The JBT's are at the door, what should I do?  Poll coming".

BIIIIIG +1

Don't keep all your firearms in one place and it won't be an issue. Once you've been made 'clean' by the .gov, you'll likely never be searched again for firearms.

It's just a gun.

I'd give it up and grab another from a cache. No use in being killed for something that stupid - in a SHTF, I need to protect my wife and baby. Being vetilated for not giving up a firearm is someting I would try to advoid.

If they are up close yeah they can have it - until I grab a scoped long range rifle from the stash and proceed to take it back along with whatever they brought.

You all have no idea how many LEO's would do the same.  Most I predict.   Got to keep that paycheck and bennies, hm?   "Screw the Constitution and independent thinking.  Gotta finish my shift and go home to my flatscreen TV."

Sad.  Very sad but if/when that time comes we gun owners will become the hunted, and our neighbors will turn us in.

The internet tough guy in me says "I'll give it to them...bullets first!"

The realist, however, says "I don't really know how I'd react in such a situation until I'm actually there."

Locals won't be a major problem, i know them and they know there just out gunned and out numbered. One good think about living in a very small town. Long as the guards don't use jets they won't be a problem. I'm between two bridges that won't hold a tank and it would take days to get a tank over the mountains here.

depends on how bad the SHTF situation, is if there total anarchy feel the rush and do what will protect you and your family. After all, if he follows orders and is prepared to take your weapon he is a trator to the motherland and should be dealt with anyway :)

I bet that 90+ percent of all officers and/or guardsmen will do exactly that

If it was National Guard or a Federal Agent then I would place them under citizens arrest for violating federal law forbiding any member of any agency which recieves federal funding from confiscating privately owned weapons during an emergency.

Cops and Guardsmen are not allowed ot break the law either, and since the law is they cannot disarm you now, you are justified!! Shoot! Shovel! Tell their buddies you haven't seen anyone matching the description of their missing friends!!

+1   That's why you should always have throw away gun.   If it happens after my kids have left the nest?  I might just decide principle over pragmatism.  Lots of people have died for less.

I'd hand it over. No sense in making things worse in a SHTF situation. Gun owners
are irresponsible for the most part. Taking their guns during a time of disaster or civil
unrest help would ensure the safety in the local community.

that or only if they ask politeley and say please

edit: this is a non issue as a law was passed barring such actions durring future disasters.

This discussion should never arise without the mention of what happened in New Orleans. It's relevant, it's recent, and it needs to be remembered.
