hey guys - just curious, how much ammo do you keep stocked for when the hoards of zombies attack?

Every time I accumulate a decent quantity of ammo I go shoot it all up.

If the zombies come while I am on the way to the range I have a chance. Otherwise, I'm zombie chow.

Reload for the range.

Shit, I have 1300 rounds in a caliber that doesn't fit any firearms I currently own (7.62X51mm)

I'd have to do some counting, but I have more than that in 8mm Mauser, and almost as much in 7.62X39mm  I do need a few cases of .30-'06, and could always use more .45ACP and 9mm.

I keep on forgetting your a mod now.

100 million, billion rounds per gun would be my ultimate goal I think, but I did write down my realistic goals a few years ago.

1000 min per bolt action centerfire rifle
5000 min per battle rifle
5000 min per handgun
20,000 min .22
1000 min birdshot
500 min buckshot

To me this is reasonable, and affordable if purchased over years.

ETA:  I am nowhere near my goal, and with prices of everything going up, my ammo purchases have been going down.  The only "good" thing about higher gas prices is that I'm shooting less often though.

Dry firing is getting old

I've seen how guys here have a shitload of magazine's worth of ammo, and then I thought to myself, that was silly.

I've got around 20 mags for my AR, and between my LBV and thigh rig, I can carry more than half of that without slowing myself down.

The answer to the situation is to get as much ammo as you can carry on your person without weighing yourself down too much. Otherwise, you'll either be too slow, or what's the point of having more ammo than you can carry? You gonna drag it all over the place with you?

If you need more ammo than that, then you escape and relocate, or go find one of the guys with 10,000+ rounds of .223/5.56 and share

How much ammo should you keep on hand for zombies???  It depends upon how long you want to live after the zombies attack...

You are assuming we will be mobile in every situation. I have a load out plan for my urban assault vehicle and trailer in the unlikely event I will have enough notification to head for the hills. If not I will defend in place. It will take an extreme situation for me to go foot mobile I see no benefit in that.

I don't see any advantage in only keeping enough ammo to carry on my amazing body Why would you prepare for the least amount you can carry situation.

All my neighbors are liberals and some have hot wives. My plan is to claim the wives as property in a real SHTF scenario along with all their food and other goods and the husbands will need to vacate the area (sorry neighbors). Or and the not so hot wives will need to go with the men

I decline to state how much and what kind of ammo I have for fear it may tend to incriminate me

for zombies i only carry a 22 with 2 rounds.

i plan to use the buddy system

when zombies are chasing you you don't have to outrun the zombies..... just your buddy. a 22 in each knee should slow him down enough

Is there a maximum defined amount of ammo that someone can posses and store in their residence?

As for how much, I dont have enough.
I do have it where it is accessable and would go in the back of the truck quickly should an issue arise that required I leave my home

I know I'm not leaving. The area I live in we have very few things that would require me to leave. The only natural problems would be tornados (I'm always out chasing those anyway) and flooding to an extent. Anything else would be some kind of break down of society or something similar. I'm far enough out in the suburbs to not have to worry too much about rioting etc. and see no reason why I should ever have to leave.

If we're leaving this place, it's absoulte last resort. If my only option would be to leave on foot, I simply wouldn't go.

ETA: Also will soon be living in a metro area of about 6 million people. So I can never have enough ammo I plan on starting at 3-4000 for the main rifle and about 500-1000 for the handguns.

Jim Rawles said a minimum amount is:

2,000 rds per Battle Rifle
500 rds per Hunting Rifle
800 rds per Primary Handgun
2,000 rds per .22 rimfire
500 rds per riotgun

A comfortable amount however is three times that:

6,000 rds per Battle Rifle
1,500 rds per Hunting Rifle
1,600 rds per Primary Handgun
6,000 rds per .22 rimfire
1,500 rds per riotgun

While I do maintain a combined total count of a few hundred rounds of 9mm, .45ACP, .223, .308, .300WinMag, .338LapMag; etc. available for immediate use, I mainly store components, rather than assembled rounds, for sporting purposes.

It is these stores that I would turn to, for countermeasures against potential shtf & teotwawki senarios. I won't give any exact numbers -but three...

Primers; non-magnum, match grade, large rifle: 10,000.

Primers; magnum, large rifle, match grade: 5,000+.

.22LR:20K+.

    For Zombie Attack SHTF

    Bug-In - 2000+ per rifle, 1000+ per pistol, 500+ per Shotgun

And the fuckers better be able to climb because it will not take long for the bodies to start stacking up high.

But-Out - As many loaded mags as I can carry for my rifle, shotgun (slung) and pistol.

I just hope they can't run fast like they have been in the latest Zombie movies.

Multiply the interior length width and height of your house and there your go.  You might want to divide that by 2 so you can walk around inside, but that's a personal preference thing.

The only thing that I can think of that has been left out is a little red wagon to carry all that ammo.

You're supposed to stock ammo?  That's kind of weird, isn't it?  Don't you just buy it at the range and then shoot it all before you go home?

(And yes, I actually know a guy who does that...)

(And to answer your question, I use a sword for zombies.)

1000 rounds for each caliber of rifle minimum.

500 rounds for each caliber pistol and Shotgun.

Interesting thing was reading Cormac McCarthy's book The Road where he talks about an extrem SHTF situation where ammo is rare and how shotgun rounds were reloaded and sealed with wax and how pistol calibers that didn't match could have the bullets removed and shaved to fit the spent casing of other calibers. Good book.
