What do you think is the minimum amount of food one should store for SHTF? It seems to me that if something so catastrophic happens that food becomes unavailable at grocery stores nationwide for longer than a few months, then all the prepping in the world won't matter because we would all be dead. I do see the importance of stocking up food for an earthquake, however.

honestly?

if you take SHTF seriously (i dont i guess). you want 1 year of staples. isnt that what the mormons stipulate?

i always thought that was a pretty sound idea, as long as its stuff that you can store for long long periods of time and doesnt cost a ton of money. you want a water source or purification system of course too.

Use logic:

Most likely "SHTF" scenario - localized problems (like Hurricane Katrina, or Nashville floods) - 30 days of food would be sufficient.

Worldwide SHTF on the scale that it disrupts food supply - 90+% of the population won't survive anyways. 30 days of food would likely be 28 days worth more than you'd live. Then the survivors would have everything in mass quantities.

2 years is a good goal.

ETA: Start a 72 hours. That's better than 90% of americans. Then push to 3 months of "every day" foods like rice, flour, canned foods ect. Then start pushing for 1 year of shelf stable staples like wheat and beans. Adding canned butter/cheese and freeze dried stuff when it's on sale.

I know people with 5+. Obviously do as much as you can. 1 year is realistic. 2 is as well, but takes up a lot more space. Most people don't have the room for 3+ years of food storage for a family at a primary residence.

I've got enough rice and beans stacked up to sit back and wait while all you mofos kill each other. So long as the zombiecrats don't find the bunker I will be fine.

I'm not Mormon but 1 year of food sounds like a good place to keep working on the supplies.

Cause after two years if you haven't figured out how to grow enough food to sustain your family three years will only put off the inevitable.

Here's another point - do you keep your stash at the BOL or your normal residence, because there are obviously some situations where you could be caught at one location and you food is at another.  Honestly, I find these threads fun but ultimately you find out that any answer under the sun will be uttered and you realize there's no "right" answer.

well.. if it shft and then the world stops, you need to plan like this i think..

do you have a farm that grows crops that you can live off of and barter?, then say shft at the end of the summer. if you are lucky the farm stuff you have you havent sold and can can and preserve. now if you dont but you have access to farmland then you will be growing most crops starting next spring, which will come available i guess mid to end of summer. so you're food stored up has to last you until you're crops come in. lets make that a year. and if your first season sux and the crops dont come in, or they arent enough you'll need more... and does your shtf supplies include enough seeds for your garden? etc.

I'm lazy - I just note who in my neighborhood has stocked up that doesn't own any guns...

...just kidding!

Though I did have that discussion during the Y2K scare with a co-worker. He was stocking up on food and supplies. I knew he was an anti-gunner. He asked if I was. I said no, I'm stocking up on ammo. He asked why. I said if it gets bad, I know where there is a supply of food that is rather poorly defended.

A short time later, he started learning about firearms and is no longer an anti.

Depends on your circumstances though. Bulk food is cheap and stores well. Just remember to rotate your cooking oils.

I personally wouldn't have less than a year's worth because a year will at least get you thru to the first harvest if you plant food, with some reserve for a do-over if the crop fails.

That's why some survivalists also stock seed.  I don't (yet), but my preps are less Zombie Apocalypse then they are Natural Disaster, or some other more mundane adversity.

I'm working on a year's supply; currently at the 7 month mark, approximately (for a family of four).

I tell people that are just getting into this that they should stock, at a minimum, 10 days worth of food, water, and meds...and that's what the .gov reccomends as well.  I try to get them to go for one month.  I really believe that even the 10 days, however, would put a family head and shoulders above 99% of the urban population, but I have no numbers or facts to back that up––just my opinion.

Water should be a major concern.

Usually, for types like us, it's all about guns and ammo.  Too many of our brethren feel that if things go topsy-turvy, that they'll emerge as an ersatz Lord Humongous, and take what they wish by force.  Seems like a silly way to put your family or yourself at risk, when putting away a months food and water is definitely less expensive than the cost of an AR.

Come to the Survival Forum, in the "Outdoors" topic.  There's good people there.
