I thread in the AR forum about the Army having a competition for a new carbine got me thinking about the SCAR.

Has anyone heard how it is doing in Afghanistan? I would bet that if Regt has good results it would be the new rifle for big Army.

I've seen exactly ONE SCAR here in theater and I see a quite a bit of those doing the field testing of the weapon. I don't see the M4/M16 family going anywhere because there is nothing evolutionary about the SCAR that replaces the M16 family of weapon systems. Remember that for a weapon to be issued to the force it has to used by the lowest common denominator and be cost effective. Since the M4 can be modified to almost anyone's liking and units can create a uniform standard for parts and accessories, the SCAR and any other weapon system coming along are not likely to succeed as the rifle of choice to replace the M4.

We sitll have M14s and M1s in stock for snipers despite having modern sniper rifles if that tells you anything.
