How? Pull the ribbon out and attempt to read the imprints on it? ![]() Brilliant!
Too bad lots of folks won't get it. I learned to type on a manual Smith-Corona with a cloth ribbon - the IBM Selectric II with the fast-moving ball was an upgrade, and I remember being able for the first time to correct mistakes without an eraser! |

McCain's systems were hacked in a similar fashion apparently. http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/node/10220
"The computer systems of both the Obama and McCain campaigns were victims of a sophisticated cyberattack by an unknown "foreign entity," prompting a federal investigation, NEWSWEEK reports today. At the Obama headquarters in midsummer, technology experts detected what they initially thought was a computer virus—a case of "phishing," a form of hacking often employed to steal passwords or credit-card numbers. But by the next day, both the FBI and the Secret Service came to the campaign with an ominous warning: "You have a problem way bigger than what you understand," an agent told Obama's team. "You have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system." The following day, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe heard from White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, to the same effect: "You have a real problem ... and you have to deal with it." The Feds told Obama's aides in late August that the McCain campaign's computer system had been similarly compromised. A top McCain official confirmed to NEWSWEEK that the campaign's computer system had been hacked and that the FBI had become involved. Officials at the FBI and the White House told the Obama campaign that they believed a foreign entity or organization sought to gather information on the evolution of both camps' policy positions—information that might be useful in negotiations with a future administration. The Feds assured the Obama team that it had not been hacked by its political opponents. (Obama technical experts later speculated that the hackers were Russian or Chinese.) A security firm retained by the Obama campaign took steps to secure its computer system and end the intrusion. White House and FBI officials had no comment earlier this week." |

Report: Foreign Powers Hacked McCain, Obama Camp Computers
The FBI and U.S. Secret Service contacted both presidential campaigns to discuss hacking by foreign powers into their computer systems. FOXNews.com Thursday, November 06, 2008 The computer systems of both John McCain's and Barack Obama's campaigns were hacked into by a foreign power, Newsweek magazine reported Wednesday. Obama staffers said they first noticed suspicious activity in the middle of the summer, but figured it was just a run-of-the-mill "phishing" program designed to steal credit card information. But the next day, the FBI and Secret Service told them that it was much worse than that. "You have a problem way bigger than what you understand," Newsweek reports an agent told the Obama campaign. "You have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system." Even the White House got in on the act, with President Bush's chief of staff Josh Bolten telling Obama campaign manager David Plouffe, "You have a real problem ... and you have to deal with it." Later, it emerged that the McCain campaign had also been attacked, with one aide confirming to Newsweek that the FBI had gotten involved. Obama's team concluded on its own that the hackers were Russian or Chinese and, according to the FBI and the White House, probably seeking foreign policy information. There was no evidence either campaign had hacked the other. FBI and White House officials contacted by Newsweek had no comment. |

Sounds like the Russians now even have more bargaining power over the manchild Obama. Maybe they will use those files as blackmail already? |
