[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Ruger Mini14 (Page 1 of 2)

| I found a Ruger Mini 14 at a local fun shop today for $680, salesman stated he was unable to sell it, because he was not authorized to do so, and that a manager wouldn't be back in the store until tomorrow morning. Should I say F@#k it and forget about it, or should I snag that rascal tomorrow morning. The reason I'm asking is because Mini 14's in NY are about as rare as golden hens teeth :~) |

New in the box, it's one of the newer ones from Ruger I was going to post and ask which model it was then saw you had already answered. For that price I think I would buy it. In NY your options are a little more limited now, and there is nothing wrong with a Mini-14. |

At this point in my life, I would actually prefer a Mini-14 over an AR. It doesn't appear that a Zombie apocalypse is coming anytime soon and I've grown to prefer a traditional rifle stock over a pistol grip. Plus, I could use my 10-22 as a trainer for the Mini-14 and the Mini-14 as a trainer for the M1a I've always wanted. Disclaimer: My only use for a rifle at this time is punching holes in paper and plinking. As a tool, I would much prefer an AR-15. |
|
I don't own one but my best friend does.
He bought it in 1976 when Ruger engraved them with the phrase "Made in the 200th year of American Freedom". It always functioned fine but was never as accurate as my AR. A few years ago he sent that rifle to Accuracy Systems and had it bedded and the bbl shortened. It now shoots as reliable and as accurately as my AR. I have no problems with the Ruger Mini 14. |
|
I always get a good laugh out of that. |
|
I have two black synthetic Ranch Rifles.
one is set up with a GG&G rail with a Fastfire II red dot on it, and the other recently got an Ultimak rail with a Burris 2X7X35 pistol scope. They are both set up to accept a light, and they have smaller gas ports so they don`t send empties into the next county. I have been surprised lately to see people really take to them. Other shooters want to look at them and ask questions. Ruger did a good job when they reworked them. |

I had 2 mini's, got rid of the fuckin things, groups here, there, and everywhere, tried to sight em in, they both just did what they wanted to do, never again. Yeah, when I lived in MN all my guns did that. Now that I live in AZ they all shoot sub moa....

That's about what I was going to say. I wouldn't touch one at anything over $300, but that's because I can get set up with an AR for a couple hundred bucks more once the panic buyers sell off their poorly thought-out purchases come Christmas time. |
| I've owned two of the older ones and sold them at a huge profit due to panic auctions. That's the O my good thing I can say about them. The new ones may be more accurate, but that's all. If you don't have an AR and want an AR, the Mini is a Terri me substitute that you will probably be disappointed in. If you must have it, that's probably not an outrageous price. I sold an old beat up one for $700. |

Go for it.. I've always been a fan of the mini 14. Keep your shots within 100,125 yards they will hit minute of a large grapefruit. They will eat just about any brand of 223 ammo. They are durable. Don't over scope them fixed four or fixed six power. There are a few simple things you can do to tighten up its accuracy. I've killed a bunch of coyotes, Javalinas, jack rabbits, and a couple of Bobcats with mine.
They are a short carbine you can pick up a Choate extended recoil pad to add an inch to the stock. You can send off your trigger group and have it smoothed up. If you want a recommendation of who is a great Mini smith I can recommend one that's extremely popular and affordable. I've got mine shooting 2 inch groups at 100 by basic simple tinkering. My current mini Ranch model bought in 1990 for 200.00 Brand new condition, guy didn't like it's accuracy even added a Williams peep site to it. Trigger assembly 75.00 sent to a Smith no creep crisp trigger "butter" Pin Bedded JB Weld and brass finishing nails for pins 5.00 Martin slip on Flash suppressor 17.00 Spring Buffer made from a broken Hoover vacuum belt 00.00 Gas Pin change (tames brass ejection) 15.00 set of 3 different sizes Weaver K-4 scope 25.00 used Cobbled a barrel strut together (stiffener) from a mini mag lite tube; added some density into the tube; milled the open end for a cap ; attached to barrel with some shotgun barrel clamps. 30.00 Choate pad 7.00 from a gun store bin of parts and pieces. |

|
Yet there are some Alaskans using them on seals from a small boat in the ocean. Nothing but head shots. At the most you get 2 shots. |
|
I don't have a problem with them. They get a lot of undeserved hate.
For myself, they're asking an AR price, and I find the AR a better rifle (for me). But when I couldn't get an AR, I had a mini-14 until I could. Good rifle. Excellent when surrounded: You can take out the intended target with the bullet, and a guy behind you with the ejected casing. |

I sold it to buy an AR, but not because it was a bad rifle. You'll hear a lot of shit about them from the usual crowd that have no experience besides what they read on the internet but I found it to be a great rifle. |
