So, I picked one of these up the other day.  Initially, I was holding out for a Howa mini, but this came along first so I didn't feel like waiting God-knows how long, so I picked it up.  I haven't even had it to the range yet, and I'm more and more impressed with this little rifle!  Since I don't have any Mini-30 mags, I'll probably order the AR magwell from Ruger for $20 and use 7.62x39 AR mags.  They're certainly cheaper than mini 30 mags.

I'm also trying to decide on a scope.  I'm thinking something like a PA 1-6 ACSS would be about perfect for this?PA 1-6 ACSS

I'm also contemplating the Nodak sight set, but since these 7.62x39 RAR are inexplicably accurate, I thought a scope would be better.

Then I fell into a YouTube wormhole and found this...

HOW FAST can you run your BOLT ACTION? Glades Armory swept back bolt handle Ruger American

That bolt handle looks pretty damn slick!

So who else has one of these slick little rifles, and what have you done to it?

I have one in 5.56, pretty handy little rifle.  Mine has a PA red dot and works great within 100 yards for my purposes.

I put a cheap Vortex 4-12 on mine. Great little gun. Very accurate, even with cheap trash ammo.

I'm running the PA GLx 2x ACSS on mine.
Been using it while exploring on the Rokon.
Fun set up

I added a Leupy Ultralight 3-9x. It's discontinued though, something in the 1.5-5x or thereabouts would be perfect. I have the custom CDS turrets for Vmax 123gr load and from 0 to 300 yds the range is mine.

Is it safe to assume the Vortex Strike Eagle is a turd?

What’s the bore? .308? .310?

I used a 1-4x and was plenty out to 500 yards.

7.62x39 is a pig in the air.

Put on a BDC red dot with a flip up 3x.

Keeps gun light and plenty of magnification for the practical range of the 7.62x39.

I put a 3-9x that I wasn't using for anything else on mine when I first got it just to try it out. After deciding how I wanted to set it up, I went with a Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4x. I'm happy with it. I also painted the stock with a sand-colored rough textured paint that makes it very grippy. Then I added the neoprene sleeve on the stock for comfort against the cheek. Otherwise it would be like sandpaper on your face.

ETA: That picture has weird lighting and doesn't show the new color of the rough paint correctly. These close ups are better.

Opposite for me. I was holding out for one of those but found a Howa Mini at the St Louis Cabela’s for 450 back in Feb. it came with a cheapy Nikko Stirling scope.

I’ll keep it until I can afford something better.

Cool gun the Mini, I’d like to upgrade the plate and well to metal but that will have to wait as well.

SWFA Super Sniper Ultralight 2.5-10X32

The only thing I don’t like is the BDC reticle, but they did not offer the plex when I purchased them. I got the 7.62 last fall and just found a 5.56 last week. So far loving both these little rifles.

When I got mine, the whole point was low cost platform for shooting cheap ammo (for the children, dontchaknow).
After shooting it once with an old Leopold 3x9; Mine!
Put a 1x5 Crimson Trace 3000 series on it I found on sale, and with some left over Nightforce rings... love it.  8" plates at 400 if I do my part.  Cheap too!

Picked one up new this past fall for just over $400. I webt to Academy the next day to get some cheap rings to mount a generic 3-9x40 I had laying around and ended up buying a Nikon P-300 2-7x32 with the bdc reticle for 300 blk. for $80. It works great with 7.62x39. Said and done I have a Ca. AK for under $500.

It makes me happy.

Alright, in the sub-$400 bracket I'm looking at....

Blackhound 1-8 (don't know much about 'em, but they're supposedly a Chinese OEM for others)
PA 1-6 ACSS
Burris RT-6
Riton X3 Tactix (on sale at Ranier)
Bushnell AR 1-8
Strike Eagle 1-8 (might try "make on offer" at scopelist)

Recommendations?

One thing to consider with the Ruger American's is to change out the cheesy MIM cocking piece for a proper billet cocking piece.  First things I did to my .308 Hunter was to change out the cocking piece, bolt handle and knob, and the plastic bolt shroud.  The firing pin removal tool makes the job simple to do.

I can't speak to the Riton or the Blackhound, but the Burris RT-6 is easily the best above the rest of those. It punches WAY above it's weight and is the best sub $500 LPVO, imo.

I don't like the Strike Eagle unless it's a crazy cheap.

I have a Gen 1 (flush mag) in .223....I could not abide the solid FDE stock so I painted it...The sling is just a tan repro M1 Carbine sling.

I put a straight 4 X 32 Redfield in low rings on it. It seemed sorta pointless to over-scope a 16" barreled bolt action.

It shoots a hair under 1 MOA (three rounds) at 100 yards with some 90s vintage Winchester Super X 55 gr SPs I happen to have a lot of....Meh, good enough.

Just shot one we recovered at work today. Not sure how they would hold up over the long term (not a big fan of the plastic trigger guard) but as others have said these rifles shoot extremely well, even with the cheapest ammo.

Here's a article I saved about ordering a Boyd's stock for one.

http://gatdaily.com/boyds-gunstocks-to-the-rescue/

I'm not sure if i would mess with it seeing how few rounds I'd put through it (ground hogs and such) but it's good to have options.....It's a five year-old article so maybe Boyds has made it easier by now.

Those Boyd stocks are nice, it’s an upgrade I would do if I owned one. But even as is, for an economy model rifle, I’m impressed at how well the one I shot performed

Yeah my example shot well. As for the stock it's certainly a more attractive option than that club-footed lookin' MagPul stock.....It's hideous.

Looks like the Boyds would be a bit cheaper in price too.

Those sights make perfect sense for a 7.62 X 39 carbine that's really not much more a 150 yard gun anyway.

I can see where it would make for a quick handling package for the eastern deer woods where shots are taken well within that distance.
