| Time Warner has decided to limit its internet users to 40GB/month in my city. I have multiple devices hooked up to our cablemodem through a Netgear RP614 router. I'm trying to find a way to meter ALL the traffic through the router and out onto Time Warner's network. Is there any way to easily (and relatively cheaply) do it? Thanks for any advice. |

if you/re willing to spring for one of the Linksys machines that run tomato, it does it out of the box.
It doesn't look like there are any open firmware for the model you mentioned. You could also ask TW if they have a webpage where you can monitor usage. |

tomato is very good, and you can offload your logs to remote storage in case of a power outage...
you can usually find a WRT54G for around $50 and you can disable wireless easily... i would look for the WRT54GL's there are only two versions and both support tomato... some of the later G and GS model's do not... |

the ability to offload logs is what will save you. I run the GL and have wireless disabled - when the kids are over, I turn it on.
All of the other options (buying better CPE) are more expensive and won't gain you much (if any) functionality. If you have a spare machine and are really into dicking with stuff, you could set up openbsd + pfsense and use that; you'd be trading a lot of hours of network administration and debugging for relatively no benefit. |
| Related thread. I haven't had time to try anything yet––probably won't until June. |
