Anybody own any Rhodesian Ridgebacks?I need a little input before we purchase another dog. How's their temperment, what kind of health issues to expect, etc. Some pics would be cool too.....Always wanted one & our dog Ginger needs a sidekick. Here's a pic of my better half w/Ginger.....I know the pic has been posted before but it's the only one I've got.
Any info w/personal experiences w/ Ridgebacks is appreciated, Thanks............

My pops has a half rhodie half australian shepherd.

That dog is TOUGH. Seriously, he dosen't feel pain. Very loyal, VERY strong, tons of energy. No health issues yet, he's about 21/2 years old.

gets along great with other dogs, and WILL NOT back down form aggressive dogs, animals, people.

That's been my experience, YMMV.

[sarcasm]I suggest you change the breed name to Zimbabwean Ridgeback because Cecil Rhodes was such a bad fellow [/sarcasm]

But then it would be a declining breed ;)

Charlie:

Ridgebacks are smart, loyal dogs. I do mean SMART.

My sister has a Ridgeback, and a Basenji that were raised together - they teach each other things...

Basenji's are great climbers - so now you will find the ridgeback in trees too!.  The ridgeback could teach Houdini about escapes, things like child latches will not keep a cupboard closed.  The lever sets had to come off of the doors, the ridgeback will open a door that swings toward him if it has a lever set.

The ridgeback has a good temprament, and never chewed anything as a puppy.

One thing to remember - as an adult, a ridgeback will have more endurance than Ginger.  Ridgebacks can run for miles, and you may need to supervise playtime in hot weather.  My sister's ridgeback can run my pit into the ground, but she won't quit either...

Great dogs.  There is at least one Ridgeback Rescue operation out there, perhaps you can save a life.

my boss has one and it is a big damn dog. 90 pounds of tall lean muscle. they do shed and as stated above are very smart. they need alot of companionship. if left to their own devices they will become destructive. sweet dogs but protective aswell. if you will have to leave this dog at home while you are at work you need to find another breed. a ridgeback won't lay around and sleep while you're away.

My old boss had one. Very good dog but he was the neighborhood thief. They ended up putting a lost and found in their garage and folks would stop by to pick up their stuff. He had been known to take steaks off the grill and even took some poor lady's grocery bag with a couple of two-liters in it when she took a load into the house. Other than being a clepto he was a good dog.

I've worked with a few.  Evidently they are prone to have heart problems and skin diseases and should be checked regularly before breeding [to insure healthy pups].

Keeping up shouldn't be an issue w/Ginger,I have seen her chase down & catch cottontails & jack rabbits for hours on end where we dove hunt at. I could swear she is part greyhound. She's not built for sheer speed but is got to be the fastest dog I have ever owned. She's surprisingly has high cardiovascular endurance while on the run.Mrs. Charliedontsurf takes her for a 3mi run every evening.....Thanks for the info everyone.
