[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Revolvers (Page 1 of 2)

I am gaining more and more of an appreciation for revolvers, especially older ones. So many of the older revolvers are unique. You see some that are old police guns with additional department engravings, or you have customized revolvers with fancy grips or engravings or different finishes like nickel plating. Hell, even the older Smith and Wesson M&Ps or Colt Armys seem to have their own personality. I realize that these guns were all mass produced to be the same, but it seems like over time each gun has developed unique characteristics that seperates it from all of the others. That's something that you can't really say about today's uniform black tactical semi-autos. I only have 3 revolvers today, but I'm going to be getting some more. Who else likes revolvers? |
|
I do. My wife and I own several and use them often. My "deer huntin' hogleg" is a S&W .44 mag which is VERY accurate and deadly. It shoots into about 2" at 100 yards with my handloads. I have a target from my sight-in last year in my photo album. Very deadly chunk of stainless and glass. |
|
Not to mention it can sit loaded for decades with the springs not under full tension. Failure to fire? DA pull the trigger again. SA thumb the hammer back and line up a new round and cylinder. There is no failure to feed...all of them are already chambered. Whats not to love? |
|
I bought a Ruger New Vaquero last month. It was money well spent. It is beautiful and a blast to shoot. There is nothing like the feel of a nice balanced revolver in your hand. It's old technology, but things that work well never go out of style. If only I could afford a first gen Colt SAA. |
someones been getting tapco ads. |
Now, how to get that gun to Blade! |
Oddly enough, I was tossing around the idea of picking one up...unfortunatly, I SUCK shooting revolvers Practice makes perfect I guess.. |
|
I'm a big revolver fan. It began after reading abit about Elmer Keith one night and slowly finding my way into the cult of the .44 Special. I found a perfect condition M24 shortly thereafter and started getting used to it. I then found a M29, in perfect condition, and bought that. Next came a Model 28 that I got in "Indian Country" Wisconsin for $120 that needed alot of TLC, and out went my USP Tactical with 7 mags. I slowly ended up getting rid of every centerfire semi-auto that I had that wasn't a 1911 or HighPower and kept picking up revolvers. I love Smith's the best, but also Colts, H&R, SAA's, and all the strange minutiae of the early 1900's. I think that revolvers are more fun than semi's and, generally, exhibit a greater amount of craftsmanship and character than their autoloading cousins - YMMV. Regardless, there is no debating Glock Vs. 1911 Vs. Wheelgun. Wheelgun always wins -I have had one malfunction in all my centerfire revolvers (which I bet is more than everyone else) when a loose extractor rod forced my cylinder to freeze up. I don't know why that happened, though. The gun was used to .38's and I was using .357's, but I'm not sure that was what did it. |
Beautiful! A repro, I assume? |
Werent you on the TV show Cheers?
|
Thank you. I love it. Yes, it's a repro. Works very well. www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0012637210087a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&No=20&noImage=0&Ntt=walker&Ntk=Products&QueryText=walker&Ntx=matchall&N=4887&Nty=1 |

I have a S&W Model 66 2 1/2" and a 3rd generation Colt Detective Special. Love 'em both. I still think the best all-around revo is the S&W Model 686 for the money...earlier versions anyway. I still want to own a S&W Model 29-2 6 1/2" bbl. Depending on weather and conditions, I carry both revo's when possible. HH |
is it bad that I like it.....man whats wrong with me
|
This is where the debate comes in. I like the 686, but The Model 19 4" is a better all-around handgun. I will admit that the 686 makes a better club. My prime plinker is a 6" Model 15. |
My wife's favorite all-around firearm is a 1959 Mod. 14-3 (6" bbl) I found at an Indy 1500 gun show a couple of years ago. It appeared unfired. VERY nice shooting piece. Definitely NOT unfired now. |
Yeah, I see guys at the fun shows talking their ladies into buying one as a purse gun, what with how light and all they are. After the first round through the pipe, things ain't so pretty any more
|
The leather slap would get you fired so fast these days your head would spin. ![]() Do you still have the Colt? My first partner carried a 4", but a chance at one never came my way. I was always jealous. |
I was told they had a nice selection at last weekend's gun show here locally. They wanted $1100 for them.

I like my j-frame. However, I'm a lefty, and for a lefty a single action really works good. Lefty or not nothing else compares to firing a single action one handed, particularly if the grip matches your hand and the load. You've gotta get the load to put the hammer under your thumb on recoil you see. I really like my freedom arms 97, Rugers are really nice too, particularly with a pin and latch and one leg of the trigger dropped. |
Yep, I shot it in today's thread. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=508759 Back in the day, everybody carried a slapper. Of course, we weren't quite so politically correct then either. |
Wow, $1,100 for blue Python? That is way too much. |
Without the aimpoint and light, that is one bitchin' revolver. |
