My boss brought in her daughters laptop for me to restore with the recovery disc supplies by gateway.  I did the full format/restore and everytime I try to start the machine i get this message:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:  <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.  Please re-install a copy of the above file."

I had gateway send me a new recovery disc and that still doesn't work.  How in the world can I get this working again.   Thanks

if the HDD is bad, you won't get a successful restore no matter how many times you try.
ditto for bad memory.

have you checked to make sure the hardware is ok?

a definate hardware problem.   should be kinda obvious

ANY time you restore windoz and it still gives you error messages or blue screens its a definate hardware problem.   as posted already could be memory could be harddrive, could be more serious.  won't know untill you start swapping out parts OR testing them
