These belonged to my grandfather, Joseph P. Medvetz, who served in World War 2. He passed away in 1994 of lung cancer. I was wondering if you all, with your vast knowledge of such things, can help me understand what medals he received as I would like to put in a request to get some new ones from the VA because he threw them out before he died (I think this is how you do it).
Also, under the "Remarks" section, what on earth does that mean?

Thank you,
Kyle

ETA: I also have a few pictures of him, one with his Thompson SMG leaning against a Jeep taken in Germany and a few from a book when he graduated from the 10th Mountain Division in 1947. If you would like me to post those pictures I would be glad to.

Thanks guys for the fast replies. Am I right in trying to get his medals back? (Just have to contact the VA?) Or are there other ways?

I was I had my grandfather papers(flight engineer).  He did over twenty years in the Army Air Corps from the late 1930's to the late 50's in the Air Force but all his paperwork burned up in St. Louis in the fire.  I know from what little he told my grandmother that he did fly the China-Burma-India route during the war and I have since read quite a few books about it.  He also, like many others, flew the bomb around a lot too.  All I have seen is signed letters from former presidents to my grandmother thanking her for his service.

Anyway, you are lucky you have what you there brother.

As far as getting his medals, once you figure out which ones he earned, you just buy them.  On base PX will have them.  if theres not one near you, your local VFW would probably help.

Those are interesting. I like how they say he had a ruddy complexion. Very neat to see those old records.

I am sending in a request to obtain his lost medals today. Just to make sure, these are the only ones he is entitled to?

Go to http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html.

Request a copy of his discharge papers (DD-214). It will be more readable regarding his service. There's also an option to request a one-time issuance of all awards and decorations. ETA: They'll send everything they know he should've received.

Did it for my Dad some time back. Took about 6 months. Make sure to fax in the signature document.

If he got a CIB he should have received a bronze star around 1947 and a WWII Victory medal. Request his DD-214 and then request his medals.

Ok thanks for the info guys, I sent in the request on the evetrecs.

I will get the pictures up later today Greg. It's an entire book and in the back there is a write up about what his unit was involved in in World War 2. He had been through some intense battles.
