Damn dog ate through one of my oldest extension cords that was outside powering Christmas lights!  Power was not on when it was chewed on (damn, would have solved a big problem of mine!) because of photo timer.   I think its a 16 gauge cord, but not sure.  I cut out the chewed section and stripped one of the wires, lightly rolled the strands together and its a tight fit in the 16 g hole in my wire stripper, a bit loose in the 14g hole.  See below.

I'd like to repair and use around the house.  I'm thinking of making two cords, but is there a way to join the two ends back together with a small fitting?  If so please point me in the right direction.  otherwise, I found a male/female set below on Amazon to make up two cords from the one.   Any recommendations or ideas are welcome!

Amazon Product
  • Hinged design provides fast, easy assembly
  • Ideal for replacement of plugs on tools, appliances and extension cords
  • Accepts AWG SJ 16/3

What's the big deal?  Buy a plug/receptacle from Home Depot for 5 dollars, strip the wires, make the connections, done.

Apologies as I FUBAR'd my original post at the last minute when trying to add the Amazon item on the end.  Wiped it out, except for cord pic, so I had to start over.  First post is fixed!

I like Klein myself.

Amazon Product
  • Made in USA
  • Precision ground stripping holes
  • Strong-gripping serrated nose for easy bending, shaping, and pulling of wire

Or these are cheap and good enough for a homeowner.

Amazon Product
  • Made in the USA
  • Cuts, strips, loops and gauges 10-18 AWG solid wire
  • Spring-loaded action for self-opening

And here's a real crimper:

Amazon Product
  • Plier type hand tool
  • Crimps and cuts the wire
  • Used to install A, B, C and PT non insulated terminals and splices

Just twist the wires together, keep the splices separated by a couple of inches, and wrap plenty of electrical tape on them.  They'll be fine.

I buy a lot of cheap disposable tools, but when I cut or strip wires, it is always with a Klein product.

Congrats, you now have 2 extension cords!   I've repaired a few as well and keep them for spares, but for outside use only just to be extra careful.

Unplug it before rolling it up on your arm, especially if it has nicks in it. I've seen that one too.

I use those m/f crimp on terminals and lots of tape and/or heat shrink.  Don't use wire nuts on anything mobile. I'm sure you can get away with it, but to me it's not worth the risk because they don't really save you any time or money.

Those wire strippers are fine if the thread gauges are capable of cutting small screws and bolts.  I edc a similar style at work.  Pretty handy.

I literally did this and just taped them back up after the wife cut through a cord twice.

This. I also don't leave them plugged in "unattended."

How long do the klien wire cutters stay sharp? Any proboems with the grips slipping off or breaking apart?

I'd go butt connectors then heat shrink it all together but I'm no electrician.

My dad used wire nuts on one and it's held up for 15 years now

If they're both of meaningful length, make two cords

Thats my plan, esp for outside use.  But for indoor/not damp usage, either joining it into one large or two small cords is my plan.

You fucking guys crack me up.

Dude barely knows about putting this crap together and people are throwing out suggestions for $45 tools lmao.

I'm not an electrician. I've used a needle nose pliers cutter part to strip wire for decades, including when I worked at a hobby store where I soldered shit about 30 times a day.

OP don't waste money on shit you don't need that will turn into clutter. What you have is fine for the task. The thing from amazon is what you need. Just make sure the polarity is correct.

Actually I've repaired/replaced the plugs on a number of power cords in the past so I know what needs to be done and it won't involve electrical tape/wire nuts!  But I was just looking for ideas, esp. to rejoin into one cord using some type of small, weatherproof, "junction box".  Given its GD, I expected a number of entertaining responses and I was not/am not disappointed!

This.  Dumb ass ex BIL had one spliced with wire nuts (no tape) in three places, plugged in, and laying in a puddle.  Called me because GFI was tripped and wouldn't reset.  I found it, unplugged it, sent him in to reset it, got my Klein Linesman pliers out and cut it into 2 foot sections while he was occupied.  He was pissed but the dumbass had young  kids running around.
