I'm 25 and grew up listening to the "classic rock" my parents listened to while they drove me around, but now days I never listen to the radio because there is no station in town that consistently plays music I like and I can't stand listening to the DJs. So, when it comes to music, my listening pool is limited to what I have on CDs or in my mp3 player - mainly newer heavy metal. I don't know what triggered it, but over the past week I've been going back in time with my listening: first was Alice in Chain's greatest hits, then some old school Metallica, and yesterday I started listening to Queen's greatest hits. Anyone every done this after a long break? It's really quite enjoyable.
EDIT: I need to harrass my roommate for his Led Zep CD's ***Obviously your results may vary depending on your "generation." |

I was along for the ride until you said Queen. Oh come on now, they have some good stuff Quoted:
My choices are: talk radio, alternative rock station, and the classic "rock" station (hippie music). I can't get a metal station or some real classic rock to save my life. ![]() Same here, our "rock" station intermingles good stuff with a lot of current garbage |

Well............kinda.
I'm 43 and grew up (during my pre-teen years) listening to my mom's selections on her 8-tracks and record albums. Stuff like : Kenny Rogers , Loretta Lynn , the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack , Tom Jones , Niel Diamond and watching He-Haw on Saturday Night. It was the peak of the disco-era when I graduated from my transistor radio to an actual record player I could call my own. Not a stereo , mind you......just a single speaker record player.
I was listening mostly to 45's ( not the kind chambered in a 1911) that my mom had picked up by the box load , second-hand at yard sales . .......there were hundreds to choose from . Everything from Tommy James and ? and the Mysterians to the Beatles and Freda Payne . It was a significant step up , and it was when I started to discover my own 'likes' in music.......good-ol-rock-n-roll. As far as radio went , FM was still in it's infancy and most popular music was still played on AM stations........it would be a few years before I got an AM/FM radio of my own. Sometime in the late Seventies , my parents bought me my first stereo record player , a used double-speaker model .......and a new pair of Koss headphones for Christmas . I guess they were getting tired of my loud music. I also received my first 'new' albums..........'E.L.O.'s Out Of The Blue ' ....'Boston's' debut album......and 'Queen's' News Of The World I'm pretty sure that's when my hearing damage started
About that same time , I was introduced to harder Rock-n-Roll , hanging out at my friend's older-brother's body shop . 'Deep Purple' , 'Black Sabbath' , 'Alice Cooper' , 'Nazareth' , 'Stepenwolf' , etc,etc still ring in my now-damaged ear drums. Some of my fondest memories involve 10-speed bikes , BB-guns , cigarettes stolen from my buddy's older siblings , and an old Panasonic 8-track player (the model that had one speaker and a track-changer that resembled a detonator plunger) and Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland . Batteries were so expensive back then....and we sure went thru a lot of em'. When I hear the term Classic Rock now.......I still think of Sabbath , the Stones , and Led Zeppelin . When they put Alice in Chains and Soundgarden in that 'category' .......I still snicker to myself . Metallica was about the last band that really made me wanna 'crank-it-up' ....Dang I'm getting old About the only time I listen to music anymore is when I'm on a flight and I've got my iPod jammin' in my one good ear. ETA.............and occasionally Subnet Radio |

I wasn't trying to imply Alice in Chains was "classic" rock, they were just the first step I took back in time with my CD's - leading me back to the good stuff. Nice story BTW, I like all the "classics" you listed Oh no beef with the designations.........by today's standards , AiC is classic rock . It's just that I'm just old enough to remember the 'Rooster' video debuting on MTV.
You'll have that with a 20 year age difference. |

My wife listens to classic rock stations on the radio. No thanks. As far as I'm concerned, it's old and worn out. Sure, it was great when it was new, but jesus...if you can recognize a song in the first couple of notes, it's been overplayed to death. And we have Clear Channel's digital library to thank for that . The same fucking worn-out songs , over and over and over and ––-
I had a lengthy talk with a Clear Channel station DJ about 12 years ago down in Florida.........he was quite irritated at the lack of a REAL library , and being stuck with only the most popular songs by any of the 'Classic Bands' . Fucking pathetic. |
