Why did Syrian refugees become such a hot topic?

Given the whole middle East over the past 15 years, why are we just now seeing acceptance of refugees being pushed so much, particularly those from Syria?

I feel like I didn't see the same level of concern with prior engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan?

When the protests in Syria started, till they started shooting and dropping chemical bombs not one of my friends knew what was happening,

Germany announces refugee status to those that make it there and still they don't know really what's going on and they don't care that much either.

A picture of one drowned Syrian boy who was born in Turkey, never has been to Syria, whose father put him in the boat in the first place, who was a known human smuggler, and then everyone starts to give a fuck.

The us doesn't randomly bomb or harass civilians, if you were a non-combatant in Iraq or Afghanistan you didn't need to flee the country.  Assad, ISIS, and the Syrian rebels have all targeted civilians, it's no wonder they fled to europe.

We have hundreds of thousands Iraqi and Somalian "refugee's" in the US, numbers spiked when we got "involved".
